This Year's Model Updates:

For 1998, the Toyota 4Runner gets rotary HVAC controls, a new four-spoke steering wheel and revised audio control head units.

Pros:
  • Great looks and ground-pounding performance make the 4Runner an ideal choice for people who love the great outdoors as well as those who just want to look like they do.
Cons:
  • Steep price and choppy highway ride temper our enthusiasm for this otherwise outstanding truck.

  • 4Runner is solid - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Traded in a 2000 Explorer after the steering rack and rear wiper motor broke. The rotors needed servicing at 20k as well and then the whole tire thing... Its been a while but I suspect my nephews Big Wheel rides better than that Ford XLT. Found a 98 4Runner SR5 with 25k miles on it, I expect to keep it 10 years. Other makes have more power and features, but these toyotas just plain last.

  • Top Notch! - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

This is my second 4Runner. It is much improved over my 1990 model (although I never had any problems with my old one). I just hit 60,000 miles and I have not had one mechanical problem, not even a minor one. With normal maintenance, it always seems to run like new. .

  • Nearly Perfect - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Ive had my 4Runner for years and love it!! Well, except for that its a bit rough in the ride... go across a speed bump at a bit of an angle and it throws you side to side. It could be smoother on the highway, for it picks up the road texture incredibly well. I mean, I like road feel in the steering wheel, but not feel like Im right against it. Im at a point where Im ready to buy something else, but in looking at all the reviews, all the versatility, and all my options, the 4Runner is VERY, VERY hard to beat. Its been amazingly reliable, its exceptionally capable off-road, and the features are excellent (except for the placement of the cup holders, as others have mentioned).

  • Great SUV - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I love my 1998 Toyota 4-Runner, I always keep up with the regular maintenance as recommended by the dealership and have always had wonderful performance with this vehicle. I had a camry previously, and have great success with that vehicle as well. Toyota makes a wonderful product, I am now researching the 2006, 6 cylinder, RAV4, only to achieve better gas mileage.

  • Dependibility - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I have spent 32 years in the auto industry on the retail level, and Toyota is the best of the best. They hold their value, and they do not break. My 4-Runner has 90,000 miles on it,and I have replace one set of tires, abattery and the power antenna mast. It still has the original brakes with 80% front and 90% rear linings left. My next vehicle will be the Tundra 4dr Truck.

  • 231K miles and counting - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I bought this new in 98 and it has served me very well. I drove it 231K miles and now I have handed it down to my son and I got a new (well, an 07) one. One brake job at 185K, no repairs to speak of other than a starter motor. GREAT vehicle. Totally dependable and a monster in the snow. This has been a great vehicle and will continue to serve my family well.

Drives like new car, currently have 206,500 on it, looking forward to another 200K+! Never let me down, probably never will. Regular maintenance, still has original engine and transmission, key to longevity, always use Toyota parts.

  • Very Nice SUV - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

This is a very nice SUV and Toyatos are always very good.

  • Doesnt get any better - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

This is the best vehicle Ive owned. The 4Runner is fun to drive, looks good, and is very comfortable. Beyond these distinguishing features, I have had me 4 Runner for 50000 miles now (total of 114000) and I havent had one major thing go wrong. If this isnt enough, If I wanted to, I could sell my 4Runner for almost as much as I bought it for. This is the best vehicle Ive ever owned.
