Overview & Reviews
Base models have been dropped, leaving Limited and SR5 trim levels equipped with a standard automatic transmission, Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), traction control and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and BrakeAssist. All 4Runners have power door locks this year, as well as a prewired trailer hitch harness, a modified grille design and freshened taillights. New wheels for Limited and Sport debut, and a new premium 3-in-1 audio system with a CD changer is available. Revised sun visors with extensions and a HomeLink programmable transmitter come standard on Limited and can be ordered on SR5. Limited also gets a new color of wood trim, and standard front seat heaters. There's bad news for hard-core off-roaders -- the optional differential lock has been discontinued with the demise of the manual transmission. Three new colors replace two old ones on the color chart.
- Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power hatch glass.
- Hard to climb in and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

Buy ONE, You will not Regret - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By GF - November 9 - 10:00 am18 mpg ok but not the best, more than makes up for it with the exterior body style. More power need for hwy, for city it does well.

Amazing at 107K miles! - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By John in Wisc - October 24 - 10:36 pmBought used at 30K miles. One owner (per dealer) and no wear/tear. Now at 106K miles, and repairs virtuallly nil, except the routine (1 tune up, 1 brakes). Front seats a bit crowded, could use 2" more on each. Cloth upholstery on this one - seams are opening up a couple places, need to sew them up. Handles great in snow with 4WD, excellent traction control. The engine purrs and virtually ZERO vibration at idle. Slightly underpowered at 5cyl-has tow package which is easy to hook up. Dont expect a soft "car" ride-this is a truck frame and lets you know it, but thats fine for a true SUV that can off road with the best of em.I keep it well maintained/lube oil trans . Great product

Wills 4Runner SR5 4wd - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By trancebuda - May 27 - 2:00 amThis is one of the classiest and best packaged SUV and will probably become a classics, like the Mustangs and GTOs, because no companies are making the cool shiny manly chrome bumpers and the tough rugged boxed look yet sleek and stylish body of these 2001- 2002 SR5s.

I STILL LOVE THIS CAR! - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By SueRad1030 - April 3 - 10:48 pmThis is the best car I ever had! I gave it to my son. I bought it new when he was 8 and he is now 23. I never imagined I would be able to pass it off to him This SUV still looks great and runs great!!! We had very few problems with this car. I recently bought a 2015 Toyota Camry and hope the Camry can live up to the 4Runner. This car is still running like a champ in 2018; no major problems or repairs ever on this car!

2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By Yangster - February 1 - 8:26 amBought it used w/ 78k in Aug. of 2006. No problems yet with it and 105k currently in just a little over 1yr of owning it. All I did to it was put tires and keep on driving. Due for the 90k Toyota recommended tune up. Drives nice like a truck w/ an SUV feeling. My dog absolutely loves the roll down rear window. Could use a little more space but what do you expect from a midsize truck. The gas is ok, not complaining. I average 16-17 city mix w/ hwy driving. Straight hwy is about 20-21 mpg. Not too bad. V6 motor is weak but a phenomenal mileage motor known to exceed 300k. Looking forward to upgrading to a Sequoia. Growing family. Love the truck though. 11in clearance for snow and 4wd A+

OIL SLUDGE COVER UP - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By pschumacher - October 4 - 3:05 pmBefore you purchase any used Toyota with the 3.4 V6, research: "Toyota Oil Sludge" problems. Also read up on the massive recall Toyota launched to replace thousands of engines. Unfortunately, this recall did not show up in the reliability section of my trusted vehicle review sites. I bought an amazingly attractive clunker I am not alone BEWARE I loved my 4Runner, but it will be the last Toyota I own. At 110,000 careful and certified serviced miles I need an new $6000 engine. The Toyota Service Advisor admitted there is a design issue. But nothing they can do at this time.

The most useful tool Ive ever bought - 2001 Toyota 4Runner
By kaldingo - July 30 - 10:00 amWhen car shopping, I knew what I wanted. A reliable used truck that looks great, performs well, is safe, large enough to carry 5 people and is fun to modify! In purchasing my 4Runner, I got all of the above and more.
