This Year's Model Updates:

For 1998, the Toyota 4Runner gets rotary HVAC controls, a new four-spoke steering wheel and revised audio control head units.

Pros:
  • Great looks and ground-pounding performance make the 4Runner an ideal choice for people who love the great outdoors as well as those who just want to look like they do.
Cons:
  • Steep price and choppy highway ride temper our enthusiasm for this otherwise outstanding truck.

  • Love this SUV - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

The ride is very good. Toyota reliability is legendary. All the options. Dont care for the gold lettering of the Gold package Limited. One of the only other things that I liked about my 1988 Pathfinder over this 1998 Toyota is the shoulder room. The Pathfinder felt much bigger side to side and the amount of space between the backs of the seats made it possible to reach items in the back seat much easier. The durability of the Toyota interiors are equal to the Pathfinders but both of these are leaps and bounds over the rival American vehicle interiors.

  • My third 4Runner - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

The performance of the 3.4LV6 is better than other Toyota SUV/Trucks. For speed/acceleration junkies, TRD has a supercharger that bolts right onto this engine and still fits under the . Fuel economy is better than average 15-17 MPG. Install the TRD supercharger and aftermarket non-rubber sway bar bushings! Toyota has the best lines and highest ground clearence in its class. No one in the midsized SUV market even comes close to Toyota build quality and relaibility.

  • Nothing Like it - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

I purchased this vehicle with 160,000 miles just because it is a Toyota and I know they will run forever! Vehicle drives excellent and handles well. The only problem I have encountered that I was told that is a common defect that should have been recalled by Toyota is the rear axle. The rear axle had to be totally removed and new bearings, brake shoes etc had to be replaced. I was told that this could be very very dangerous as fluid from the axle had leaked out over the brake shoes. I was told that had I had to apply the brakes very hard at sometime that they could have locked up causing the vehicle to go out of control. Toyota dropped the ball on this one for not recalling as is common prob

  • Still a great runner - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

This is our third one. Last two were 92 and 95. Good looking truck but is somehow missing the quality and content of earlier models. Interior carpet wore through, leather seats started to tear. We treat our cars great, but the 92 was immaculate even after ten years. Did Toyota think we wouldnt notice the drop in quality materials?? Motor is strong. Oil filter is in a stupid location (again!). Paint isnt holding up as well either...lots of hairline scratches. Seats are not nearly as comfortable as the old 92 model. Much smoother though on the highway. Love the rack/pinion steering, longer wheel base & smoother transmission.

  • Good Car for the Money - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Youll pay a little bit more for a 4-Runner than you would for an Explorer but you are getting a better ride and have a more reliable vehicle. I have had the car for a couple years. Have not had to put any money into it. The rear window really pays off in the summer.

  • Toyota and reliability are one - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

This experience has been nothing short of blissful. I have continuously raved about the reliability on my Limited. My scheduled maintenance is the only time Ive ever been back to the service shop. It just runs and runs and runs.

  • Good value overall - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Great value, could have a softer ride. It rides like a truck. But overall a very good vehicle.

  • Great, Dependable SUV - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I have owned my 4Runner for almost 12 years. It has been an extremely reliable vehicle. The only problems I have had are the "junky" stereo and the retractable antennae. These are obviously very minor problems. The car just wont die. The V6 is a little on the weak side, but its not too bad. The interior is a little cramped. But, this SUV is a monster in bad weather. In 4WD this vehicle cant be stopped. I cant say enough about how great this vehicles is in the snow. Overall, this is a great vehicle to pick up even after 12 years. If you can find one with modest mileage and a clean title, you will not regret your choice.

  • Great machine - 1998 Toyota 4Runner

After 80000 miles I still love this truck. The high ground clearance is very useful. The engine runs like a Rolex. I have owned 23 cars. This one is the best all around vehical so far.

  • 1998 4Runner Limited - Very Reliable - 1998 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I purchased a 98 4Runner Limited with 87,000 miles on it and was not at all concerned with the mileage because of Toyotas legendary reliability. At 90,000, I had the timing belt, spark plugs, etc. (the 90k service job) replaced and have had an excellent suv thus far. Knock on wood...I have not have any problems whatsoever with the suv. I have put about 16k miles on it including taking a 3,500 mile trip this past summer and experienced smooth sailing through the mountains, desert, etc.
