Its been a great vehicle so far, a high performance tank. It drives great, is incredibly quiet & comfortable, looks great, handles well. My only knock is mileage. The computers consistently 1.5 - 2 mpg higher than actual mileage, & in normal commuting (some highway, some town) Im only averaging a little over 16 mpg.

this is my second 4 runner. I was pleased with my last one 96 and didnt have to spend a penny on any maintenance costs other than routine care. I am very pleased with my 2003. I hope to have the same experience as I had with my 96. So far, so good!

Our family has owned the 4Runner Sport 4WD 4.7L V8 since late 2002. We were one of the first to be driving the new model in Calgary. I remember pulling up to the Banff Springs Hotel and having the Valet ask if we would mind leaving it in front of the hotel. He thought it belonged next to the BMWs. Its been 3 years now and I havent had 1 thing to do other than oil, regular maintenance and tires. The traction control is exceptional, loads of power. We used to pull our 23 trailer with a Z71 and the Runner pulls it with greater ease. The off- road gadgets (DAC, Locking Diff and 4W Low) all work very well together when crossing streams or driving up Quad trails.

Owned 94 4Runner; sold in 99 @ 125k miles w/ NO unsched maintenance. Bought 03 SR5 4wd V8. HUGE improvement. $24k for loaded SR5 4wd in 94; $29k for 03. Now have full-time 4wd, SR5 appearance package (no UGLY plastic clad fenders), no sway, more room, better ride, quiet, center locking differential, rear seat audio w/wireless headphones and remote (kids listen to their station while you listen to yours on the 10 speakers), 17" wheels, alarm system, fog lamps, daytime running lights, moonroof, auto off head/fog lights, auto closing tailgate, hill hold, downhill assist, V8. $1,000 BELOW invoice in northern Virginia! Not "truck-like" (RE: Durango).

Handling on mountain roads exceptional for a 2 ton SUV. Steering response good. Transmission flawlessly smooth. Cargo area small but still OK. Blind spot when changing lanes(smaller 3rd window). Headlights are much improved. Projector fogs work well. Extra room inside is great. Ride much improved, especially body roll. V8 with plenty of power/torque right off the line and pulls strong throughout power band. Computer overestimates mileage. Brakes feel like overboosted but stops quickly w/4wheel disc brakes. Body design much more aero than prior models. Interior instrumentation a negative. All in all an advancement and the cladding will have to grow on you.
