This Year's Model Updates:

Two new models, the H6-3.0 L.L.Bean Edition and the H6-3.0 VDC, both featuring a more-powerful 3.0-liter engine, join the happy Outback family.

Pros:
  • The security of all-wheel drive, comfortable on pavement, capable on dirt, well-appointed interior.
Cons:
  • Questionable exterior styling, still not an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability.

I love my LL Bean Outback. Its 2 toned which makes it look like a small SUV. The 6 cylinders give me plenty of get up and go. It has and excellently smooth ride and gets fairly good mileage on the highway, not quite as good in city driving. It has loads of room to pack and haul things. I would buy a new one today but Subarus last forever. At 50,000 miles all I needed was fluids checked and an oil change.

Bought my Outback H6 3.0 used with about 143000 K and it now has 158,000 on it with no signs of slowing down. the ride is very comfortable especially for long drives, and outside noise is non bothersome. While the car does have a raised suspension and a good ride, it still handles very well, so much so that I was keeping up pace with STIs and Porsches on the famed mulholland drive in Malibu. If this exact car was available for sale new today, I would buy it in a heart beat.

No complaints...runs perfectly and I get many compliments. Tires are a bit noisy - I will not put the same ones on when I replace them.

This car has never broken down. We use it for both local and long distance driving, and have never been disappointed by performance in the New England weather. It handles snow and rain without a hitch and has been very reliable during icy road situations (the AWD works like a champ). We love this car, and plan to keep it for a very long time! :)

I am a long time Subaru owner and my current Outback is the fifth I have owned. Its overall performance and reliability are excellent. The styling is excellent as well. Based upon my experience with this model I most likely will buy another Subaru when I am ready to trade this one in. My only real complaint is with the transmission. It is solid and reliable, but it is rather clunky. By that, I mean it does not always shift smoothly and I often feel it slightly hesitate and "clunk" rather gracelessly into gear. I dont think this rough shifting fortells a more serious problem.

I rented an Outback when I was working in Idaho last winter, and I really liked the way it handled. I needed a new car because my brothers old Honda was getting to be too old. And I just wanted something new. In fact, I test drove a 2004 Outback, but the dealer had a 2001 Outback LL Bean edition with a larger engine and lots of extras for the same price as the new 2004. Im sure I paid too much cause I bought it immediately and I didnt know whether they would even deal on a used car, but Ive never regretted buying it. I own a 1984 Porsche 944 that I didnt even drive last summer because I was still in love with my Subaru Outback. I drive a lot for work, and Im very happy with this car.

OK, So I wanted ONE car to replace my three: MR2, Miata, & F250 4x4... Was looking at many options in the Small SUV market including the Forester [like driving in a fish bowl and under powered w/o Turbo] and with a very limited budget [darned economy] I was very lucky to find mine [priced low because it had 169k miles on the clock] 1. The power is very adequate even surprising at times. The trade-off is a few MPG and having to buy Premium fuel, but annually for me this only amounts to $150, and no Timing Belt worries or Head Gasket problems with the H6! 2. It handles better than an SUV, but no MR2. 3. Ive moved a ton of bricks [with trailer] about as much as the F250 could w/ trailer.

This is my second Subaru. I purchased this one at 112K miles, currently over 160K and other than front brakes & tires, I havent spent a dime!! Every tank of fuel exceeds 25 MPG, it has yet to burn one drop of oil, and even they are shocked!!! Subarus have outstanding reliability and economy. They dont take abuse well. For example if someone is a rookie at driving a clutch, could you wear one out at 88K? Yes, easily. Thats not a knock on Subaru, thats the driver. Buy a Subaru, you wont regret it.

Having been familiar with the Subaru reliability aspect for years,I was pleased to purchase a new Outback Ltd. The OB is a great blend between car & SUV.I was hesitant to purchase a brand new car at first, but soon it had 5,ooo,10,000,and now it has almost 30,000 trouble-free miles on It. Have not been to the dealer for any defects or problems. How many american cars can say that? The leather seats are just getting broken in.(a little stiff at first)The 2 tone paint is very appealing.Overall,I can see this car easily reaching 150-200,000 miles with proper maintenance.Excellent v@alue
