Overview & Reviews
Two new models, the H6-3.0 L.L.Bean Edition and the H6-3.0 VDC, both featuring a more-powerful 3.0-liter engine, join the happy Outback family.
- The security of all-wheel drive, comfortable on pavement, capable on dirt, well-appointed interior.
- Questionable exterior styling, still not an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability.

Last Subaru Ill own - 2001 Subaru Outback
By Enough - May 10 - 11:13 amThis is my 3rd Subaru. I bought it because the first 2 were bulletproof -- no problems. We are at 77k miles now. The head gasket had to be replaced at 72k. Yes it was covered since the car had the coolant treatment. Asking around after it happened, this is now a common problem with the 2.5 engine. Now, the transmission needs to be rebuilt. According to a local transmission shop (not the dealership) 77k on this transmission is good! He often sees them with less. Often? Somewhere Subaru lost the reliability that kept me coming back. The company has refused requests to repair the vehicle. Theyve offered token gestures like a rebate on a new car purchase. Im done with Subaru.

Last Subaru - 2001 Subaru Outback
By Mr.Subaru - April 10 - 2:00 amWow! The third time is not a charm. I have become known on a first name with the dealership. Multiple problems with the car. I opened a ticket with Subaru of America and they said all the problems happened post my purchase -- my last Subaru. Although the engine is major step up, the acceleration is not going to cause any neck injuries. Please check the following before purchasing: AC/Brakes/Steering Wheel Assembly -- normal is front 9-to-3, ours was from 11-to-5/Front Bumper -- Cleft/Back Wiper/Alignment.

Costly to maintain - 2001 Subaru Outback
By First and last - May 5 - 12:03 amApparently all of those who told me to buy a Subaru because "youll never have any problems" never owned a 2001 Outback. Granted, I did buy it when it was 4years old and had 100K miles on the clock, but it was fun to drive and looked great. The check engine light has been on more that its been off: O2 sensors, catalytic converter, knock sensor have all been replaced and yet the light is still on. Brakes seem to wear out quickly and then there were the head gaskets to be replaced. This one has needed more expensive maintenance than any of the other cars Ive owned. But its still fun to drive and the drivers seat is even more comfortable now that my wallet isnt as fat.
