This Year's Model Updates:

Noting Forester fans' desire for more power, Subaru adds a turbocharged XT model to the lineup. The XT is essentially a loaded XS with a 210-hp engine replacing the 165-hp motor.

Pros:
  • Standard all-wheel drive, two engine choices, availability of upscale features, class-leading crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Price can be higher than most of the competition, tight on legroom in the backseat.

  • What a great mix of performance/utility - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

I have been a performance car enthusiast all of my life. Alas, with a second baby added to the family, it was time to move to something bigger and more "practical." I drove several "good" cars in those categories to replace my Cobra, but none which would make me really happy. Finally, I heard about the XT. WOW is all I have to say! Within one minute I knew I had found the car. This car is a total blast to drive (now that Im over my break-in!) and I am very impressed so far with the build quality and ride. The AWD is just second to none. Now I look forward to storms coming through! I cannot wait to take it to the mountains to try it in the snow.

  • GREAT SMALL UTE - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

If you want a spacious, well-built, fun to drive small UTE with the BEST AWD system and the highest safety rating, look no further. We are so impressed with this automobile - on all levels. We even drove in the heart of the Canadian Rockies on a rough muddy trail, stream crossings and STEEP inclines....it did great! All that, PLUS the legendary Subaru reliability? What a package!

  • Too many other choices to buy this again - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

This car is well thought of for some people. I dont understand why. There are too many good alternatives to this car to buy another one. Normal recommended maintenance is expensive and add in wheel bearings and head gaskets and its like buying another car. The car is marketed for harsh weather and service, but it doesnt seem to be built for it. Before buying search on head gaskets and wheel bearings and see if you still want one.

  • GREAT SAV NOT SUV - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

This is a great car . Subaru was the first out with all wheel drive and now look at all the other car mfg comming out with it. The ride is great, and just enought HP. Take it from me you dont need the turbo it takes the top grade of gas and who needs to pay another $0.25 a gallon.

  • 04 Forester XT - 2004 Subaru Forester

Excellent car. The build feels solid, I have owned this car for about 2 years now with no problems at all. The all wheel drive combined with the 210 hp turbo engine is great in the hills. This car is awesome in the snow, never any problems at all navigating in snow. It also grips well in dry and wet weather, I feel very safe in this car. Excellent ground clearance, never any issues on mtn roads. The interior seems solid, no creaks or rattles or anything falling apart. I think for the money you cant get a better car.

  • 04 Forester beats the competition - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

replaced my 1999 Forester with the 04 model. What a delightful surprise to see what has happen in 5 yrs. Better interior design, a little higher seating, more comfort, better handling. Plush. Loved the 99, had 75,000 miles and never a problem. Quality and value you come to expect from Suburu. Test drove toyota rav4, honda crv, hyundai sante fe and jeep liberty, and tryed the Subura LAST. None of the competitors could stand up, and I really tryed not to buy another Suburu because I wanted to see if there was something better in that class--dont waste your time--try the Suburu Forester 1st. NO NEED to go further.

  • MY SECOND FORRESTER - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

THIS IS MY SECOND FORRESTER, MY 1999 DID NOT HAVE A SUNROOF AND I LIKE CARS WITH SUNROOF SO I ORDERED MY NEDW 2004 WITH A SUNROOF, WHICH I LIKE VERY MUCH AND I LIKE DRIVING WITH THE SUNROOF OPEN. THIS 2004 HANDLE A LITTLE BIT BETTER THAN MY 1999, LIKE THE UPGRADED ELECTRNICS. THE 2004 HAS GOOD HANDLING IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH THE TWO KAYAKS ON TOP. IN THE SNOW THIS VEHICLE IS HANDLES THE SNOW VERY WELL. THIS FORRESTER GETS GOOD MILLEAGE. WITH THE HIGH COST OF GAS I WILL BE KEEPING THIS FORRESTER FOR A LONG TIME.

  • The 2004 Subaru Forester was a Life-Saver - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

I bought a silver Forester because of the snow and ice we get in Eastern Oregon. This car exceeded expectations. I never got below 25 MPG on the hwy, and around 22 in town. When "Chains Required" signs are posted on the interstate, this car buzzed past all the cars chaining up. Subaru is amazing for their safety and high quality. Because my son survived an extreme accident with only bruises I can endorse this car fully. Im not saying another car wouldnt have performed as well. But this Subaru when put to the test, passed with flying colors.

  • Please with Forester - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

Rides and handles very well, more like a good Sedan than other small SUVs. Over 15,000 miles so far. No problems at all. Comfortable seats. Good acceleration for most drivers. We prefered its large H4 to some competitors small 6s. AWD / trans very smooth. Plenty of Cargo Room. Back Door is _not_ impeded with spare tire as is case with most direct competitors-- a plus. Mid heigth between typical SUVs and Cars makes for easy access and good view. If you are really hung up on "command view", buy something else. Gas milage slighly better than advertised near 30 mpg on the highway. LOVE the big moon roof, view, overall performance.

  • If youve gotta have a baby-mobile.... - 2004 Subaru Forester
    By -

Went looking to Subaru when we found out we were expecting. The Forester was our choice for manuverability in our tight garage. However, once I drove the XT, the turbo was non-negotiable. I had to have it. Now Im enjoying knowing that my wife is driving a very safe vehicle, and I can make most other cars on the road eat my dust. I cant wait to hear my kid say, "Faster Daddy!"
