  • not as good as expected - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

While I love the AWD, and the best gas mileage around for an AWD, I have not been extremely happy with the quality of this car. There seem to be a number of items like head gasket seal problems and cold weather fuel leaks that the dealer/Subaru will not cover, even though though they are design flaws. The interior ergonomics are not very good either. However, after 100K is still drives extremely smooth. Id give this car average to above average marks, but I had hoped it would age better with repair issues than it has.

  • Wheel Bearings - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

I have had my Forester for over 6 years. It had 28,000 miles on it when I purchased it. It has now 200,000 miles on it. Had the defect of the Engine light which finally has gone out after changing everything at once. Wheel bearings have been the major source of anger. I have replaced the front wheel bearing twice per side and rear bearing 4 per side. Last time I decided to replace the axle, the hub and get AMERICAN bearings. The hub is the secret and lousy bearings half the problem. No problems now. Cup holders were removed. I live on a hill with a 45 degree angle. Goes up every time with 6 inches of snow ! For all the BS, I will buy another and trade it every 4 years.

  • OEM Bridgestone Tires - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

BIG BUT however: the Bridgestone Dueler tires are poor, unsafe in any kind of winter conditions. seconded by Consumer Reports tests, user experiences. There are many other all season tires that have better all season performance without poor handling in snow. Why buy an AWD if the OEM tires no va (remember Chevy Nova?) in winter? More: at 25K the Duelers were worn, wear bars up to tread. 25K wear !!! Replaced with Michelin Symmetrys that DO perform.

  • When the going gets tough - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

Well, it all started well. Then the warranty expired and so did the rear- wheel bearings three times, then the Catalytic converter... I loved this car, now I cant wait to unload it. I drive waiting for the next thing to start buzzing, humming, or cracking. Oh hey, the great oversized windshield had to be replaced three times... But, the silver lining is that you can sell the car fast to dealers shipping overseas. Wonder why?

  • RT REAR WHEEL BEARING 6TH AND COUNTING - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

First right rear bearing went bad 2,000 miles after I purchased the car two years old used. Since then, it has been replaced four more times and now needs another one replaced. Worst part is that the bad wheel bearing causes that tire to wear much more quickly. With AWD all four tires must match. Thats a lot of tires. $$$

  • blowin in the wind - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

Not only has my check engine light been on FOREVER, my major complaint is this is the most uncomfortable vehicle Ive ever owned. Wow, the seat is KILLER on my back if Im in it over an hour. Cup holders are cheap and in the way? What were they thinking? This car blows all over in any kind of wind. Heat is great, gas mileage is less than great. Radio is not great either. So far Im at 130,000 and I havent had to put too much work into it, but the comfort factor is zero! Oh my aching back!

  • Its fun when it works... - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

I have just received word from my mechanic that my $25k Forrester (admittedly with 140k miles) will not pass inspection due to the stupid engine light being on again. It has been on almost constantly since I purchased the auto on 4/1/00. I have replaced the O2 sensor 3 times in the last 18 months, have had to replace the axle when the tire fell off (the lug nuts just sheared) in dangerous conditions on the West Side Hwy in NYC, and I will probably buy something else very soon. The car was great when it was new, and even up until last year before things started to go wrong. I am hoping that Subaru will stand behind its product, but it hasnt so far. If they do, I will amend this review and let you know.

The car just went over 160,000. So far the head gaskets have had to be replaced (this was the subject of a recall) and the front axle was replaced. The check engine light has been on since 60,000. Apparently this means nothing. The Forester is excellent on the icy roads of NW Pennsylvania. It feels very well made. Overall the car has been very good and I will probably buy another one. I think I got my moneys worth.

  • love it but the bearing - 2001 Subaru Forester

We just love our Forester. We did however have some problems with the rear bearings. After replacing them under warranty four times, Subaru gave us an extrended warranty and sealed bearing. It was lots of hassle to get this done but now we love it.

  • Do yourself a favor-dont buy a Subaru! - 2001 Subaru Forester
    By -

We bought our 2000 Subaru Forester in 2005. It only had 45,000 miles on it so we thought it was a great deal. A few months down the road it started showing signs of trouble-needed a new o2 sensor, then we have had an ongoing problem with the catalytic converter and have replaced it with a new one a few months ago, now it wont pass inspection-one garage says it is the gasket-another garage says it is a leaking problem and it needs to be welded (catalytic converter) also brakes also the cv boot was cracked and needed to be replaced-it is a constant drain of money-trading it in for something more reliable! Subaru is horrible!
