Safety First - 2001 Subaru Forester
By Paul Bordegaray - February 3 - 1:26 pmWe traded in a new Civic when we decided we wanted a safer vehicle for our toddler, Our choice was validated the following winter when we were involved in a near head on crash. No one injured - the car performed magnificently! And still does!

Quirky but fun and reliable - 2001 Subaru Forester
By elgreen - November 24 - 2:00 amOkay, so the Forester is neither car nor SUV, but its still roomy, reliable, reasonably thrifty (compared to competitors in the compact SUV market) and is fun to drive. Okay, so being low to the ground with fat 16" tires isnt going to make it an off-roader anytime soon, but that same low to the ground trait also makes it fun to drive, and the 165 horsepower engine moves its 3,000 pounds around with reasonable alacrity.

Ill do it again - 2001 Subaru Forester
By ForesterAgain - September 14 - 2:00 amSuperb handling, great looks, a c0ouple of issues with the oxygen sensor and the right front inner steerin/drive boot are all that prevent this form being an ideal auto for the money. This was my first, but definitely not my last Subaru!

Better than my Jeep Cherokee! - 2001 Subaru Forester
By jmsillers - August 31 - 2:00 amComing from a 95 Jeep Cherokee and having them both in a Minnesota winter I can say that the traction and control of the AWD system greatly outperformed teh Selec-Trac and All-Time 4WD system of the Jeep. while the Jeep slid and tailed a bit on ide and soft snow, the Subaru was easier to control and more predictable. I also shopped for a 2001 Cherokee and found that little had changed in the 5 years since Jeep had made my 95 Cherokee. The interior had been upgraded but still lacked the comfort and amenities of the Forester.

Rust - 2001 Subaru Forester
By tuscansun - June 10 - 10:00 amI noticed very early on the car tended to rust some. This concerned me because of Subarus reputation for rust. There are several spots but the dealer does not acknowledge a problem. On the postive side the car handles well and goes extremely well in snow. I would definitely purchase another one if the rusting situation can be resolved.

Safe and fund to drive - 2001 Subaru Forester
By rramirez2001 - May 13 - 10:00 amI love my subaru. I love the way it drives and how safe I feel in it. It handles like a dream in wet weather. Its the perfect height, no climbing up or down. If i had to say anything negative, it would be that the back seat is a little shallow, not a lot of leg room. So if you have tall children or will be carting friends around a great deal, they wont be able to really kick their feet out in the back. Other than that, I think its perfect.

2002 Subaru Forester - 2001 Subaru Forester
By S. Benmeir - May 7 - 10:00 am2002 Forester. It would not start the day after purchase, but dealer could find nothing wrong. Few days later oxygen sensor went bad, and it had to be serviced again. The dealer (Morehart, Durango, CO) returned it to me with a large dent which I did not notice immediately, so what could I do. The gas mileage was bad at first (about 20), but have recently gotten over 30 mpg on the highway. The tires stink. I blew a tire by running into a rock on a dirt road at 3 mph. I was told that if there was more than 4/32" difference in the tread between tires, it would void the warranty on the car. Finally, its UGLY with a capital U.

Bad Roads - 2001 Subaru Forester
By TFC - April 23 - 9:36 pm(90K) Handled very well 2000 miles and very bad dirt rural roads in Laurel Hill Fl. in 04/2009. Only normal and minor things wrong. Front passenger axle assembly, $268, 03/2008. Alternator 11/2008 (rebuilt), $168. Driver door outside door handle,($69 P/L.) Clock, CD Drive (not done). Cold, Rain and moderate off road very good. Rear tire hum tolerable. Full non-towing load performance very good. Still love it. Go anywhere, do anything. Beach, fishing, hiking, bicycling.

Great Little SUV - 2001 Subaru Forester
By JT - January 25 - 5:56 amWe bought our Forester new from the dealer and have had it maintained consistently by the same dealer. This car has been flawless and having regular maintenance has kept us ahead of potential problems. Yeah, the original Geolander tires only went 26K, but I put ContiPremierContac on after and got about 65K out of them. We have driven it on 7-8 hour day trips and found no comfort issues since the seat reclines. We like this car so much, we are debating whether to get a new one... and with only 96k miles on the car its a tough call ! This car has served us well during northern Ohio winters.
