This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru's well-regarded Forester crossover sport-ute has been completely redesigned to be an even more enjoyable addition to your family. Engineers have given the tall wagon more interior room, a stiffer body structure, a revised chassis and more standard feature content -- all while keeping exterior dimensions the same and reducing the curb weight by 90 pounds.

Pros:
  • Standard all-wheel drive, availability of upscale features, high safety scores.
Cons:
  • Only one engine choice, price can be higher than most of the competition.

  • I like it and would buy another. - 2003 Subaru Forester

It has had one major repair ... piston replacement (warranty), and it is under powered. But it does incredibly well in deep snow and in icy conditions.

  • Horrible MPG - 2003 Subaru Forester

This is a great go-getter around town. If you want more (off-road ability, sports car handling, etc) look elsewhere. The design is a definite step up from prior years. Seats are stiff, but comfortable, though they could use more thigh support in the front. BUT TERRIBLE MILEAGE! Using Premium gas, this car gets well under 20mpg (15 on some tanks!) city and mixed driving. Im kind of disgusted.

  • Wind noise - 2003 Subaru Forester

When I first took delivery of my 03 Forester, there was terrible wind noise while driving on the highway. BUT, after a while this went away. Perhaps the moldings formed to the door frames. But if you are one who is suffering from this problem. Hang in there - it should go away.

Great car, reliable, handles corners like a sedan, excellent cargo room. Sometimes wish it was a little faster. I am getting more around 21-22 mpg but I do climb a steep hill to go to work every week day. Seats were a little hard for long road trips so we re-upholstered the leather seats with 3 inches of memory foam and it has made a huge difference. Rear door speakers are laughable. Drive smooth, never had a problem. Huge moonroof.

This vehicle has been dependable and good in the snow. However the engine noise is very annoying. The dealer calls it " piston slap" and says it is normal for Subaru and would not do anything under the warranty. Because of this I will probably not purchase another Subaru

  • A Happy Camper, Overall - 2003 Subaru Forester

It has been a wonderful vehicle thus far. I bought it for the AWD, and I feel really safe driving it in the snow and ice. I dont ride in the backseat, but Ive heard from my passengers that it can be a little tight if you are over 60". The cargo room is just perfect for what I need it for. I enjoy finding new places to hide/store things. The front windows are rather noisy when driving at high speeds, but overall, I have been very pleased with my purchase. I did my research and it has paid off.

  • Good bang for the buck - 2003 Subaru Forester
    By -

This is the first year of the redesign, and Subaru did a good job making the car feel more "quality." The fit/finish is higher than the previous generation, yet they still managed to pack in a lot of bang-for-the-buck features. This car is great for winter/cold-weather climates due to AWD, heated seats, etc.

  • 9 months after purchase - 2003 Subaru Forester

This is a very good car that we like better all the time. Utility and ease of use are high points. Surprsingly good handling.

  • 2003 Subaru Forester X - 2003 Subaru Forester

After researching small, safe SUVs for over a year, I narrowed my searched between the Subaru Forester and the Honda CRV. The cars were so close in every possible category it was a difficult decision. The final decision was based on safety. Government and insurance safety ratings for the 2002 Foresters were slightly ahead of the 2002 CRVs. So far, I love the car, and have not had any problems. Its safe and fun to drive.

  • Great car - 2003 Subaru Forester

Great vehicle -- very pleased with it. Smooth ride, looks good, good gas mileage for this sized car (truck?).
