This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru's well-regarded Forester crossover sport-ute has been completely redesigned to be an even more enjoyable addition to your family. Engineers have given the tall wagon more interior room, a stiffer body structure, a revised chassis and more standard feature content -- all while keeping exterior dimensions the same and reducing the curb weight by 90 pounds.

Pros:
  • Standard all-wheel drive, availability of upscale features, high safety scores.
Cons:
  • Only one engine choice, price can be higher than most of the competition.

  • Not a bad vehicle - 2003 Subaru Forester

Not familiar with the Subaru line, I was initially skeptical of purchasing a Forester. However, the more I drive it, the more suprised I am at how well it handles. What attracted me was the AWD, sunroof, and better gas mileage (I traded a 2002 Trailblazer for it as the Chevy didnt have any of those things), and the only thing I can complain about the Forester is, it isnt as roomy and has a firmer suspension. Other than that, this subaru was an excellent decision. The construction and paint is of high quality. The interior is quiet. The engine has plenty of horsepower. And there is plenty of convenience with controls, etc.

2002 model purchased new 11/2001.Love the little SUV except for seat comfort on any trip over 400 miles. Seats are too stiff, but then I was used to a Buick. Very good looking. visability rear and rear sides are very good and rear cargo area with seats folded down is larger compared to the Toyota RAV4 and comparable Honda. Great on mileage, responsive and holds the road well. Dealer service is exellent. I would rate this vehicle 10 overall if the front seats were more comfortable. A very good value for the price!

  • Good Buy - 2003 Subaru Forester

I bought my Subara Forester X earlier this month. So far I am well pleased. I bought one with a beige color interior and a red exterior. It looks superb. And I find the drive quite comfortable. Just two little minor caveats: The ride seems to be bumpier than I would have expected. Dont get me wrong, its very nice but definitely bumpier than my other car, the VW Jetta. The backseat leg room is small. I am 5 ft., 10" and I push the front seat all the way back when I am sitting. Some one of my height would find it difficult to sit right behind me. Overall, it feels and drives just like a car and I am very happy with my decision.

great performance, brakes, suspension. A real drivers car with the praticality of a wagon.

  • Good car for bad weather - 2003 Subaru Forester
    By -

I bought this car with 65,000 miles on it, now it has 100,000. Nothing wrong with engine or transmission. Forester showed high safety standards on the wet and frozen roads. I like the way Subaru handles the road and ability to drive in the all kind of weather with reasonable gas efficiency for AWD. From other side, car is obviously underpowered. And it is kind of difficult to pass other cars on the highways, it just cant get speed fast enough. So, if you are looking for a safe and reliable vehicle without any fancy design or performance, then Forester will be a right choice.

  • Forester is a winner - 2003 Subaru Forester

I have my forester for over 4 months now and im a happy camper. I am averaging 28.5 mpg for the last 6 times at the gas pump! (granted i drive mostly on the freeway). I love it when it rains... it feels safe and comfortable; I like the intermitant front wiper (can either speed up or slow down) and the rear wiper... excellent visibility. The seat height adjuster is great(driver side only). Its a great ride. Everytime I see another forester on the road, I catch myself marvelling at how great they look!

  • 03 Forester 2.5X - 2003 Subaru Forester

I totaled my 98 Camry in 06/09 & decided I needed an AWD or 4wd car. I looked at Honda CRVs, Toyota RAV4s, & Subarus. After much research & many test drives, I decided I like the Suby. I like my Forester, its a good car. However, its had some issues. Had to replace water pump due to leak from weep hole right after I got it, I replaced timing belt at that time too to save $ in the future. Now it makes whistling noises when eng revs to 3-4k rpm. Think its cat-converter, but cant fig out for sure got an extension on 80k fed war, but having difficulty with dealers. Hope once things are fixed itll last 200k.

  • good car could be great - 2003 Subaru Forester

The car is solid and practical. Some small complaints. Lumbar support is not great. Could be a bit longer in size. CD player is fair. Power is ok for most conditions. Would I buy another one? Yes, but will look at several other similar models too.

  • nice surprise - 2003 Subaru Forester

Ive owned my vehicle for 3 1/2 months now, and I have enjoyed every moment. I was looking for a vehicle with adequate cargo space, but did not want a monstrosity of a typical SUV. I did not even consider the Forester until I was disappointed with the CR-V. The Subaru is definitely worth more for the money! And I drove my Subaru from Texas to Connecticut and am constantly on the road (8000 miles so far!). I highly recommend the Forester.

  • Good bang for your buck - 2003 Subaru Forester

Had the vehicle for about 3 years now. Very satisfied with the fit and finish of the car. It has a lot of standard equipment for a base model. The 4 speed automatic transmission is a little bit lazy getting the car moving. The Forester fairs very well in inclement weather; it is also a very highly rated vehicle safetywise by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), especially when compared against rivals in this price range. My only real complaints are the tight back seat and the antiquated rear drum brakes on the 2.5X, with the perpetual squeaking problem that a dealer rep advised me was just a poor brake shoe design inherent on this model.
