This Year's Model Updates:

Noting Forester fans' desire for more power, Subaru adds a turbocharged XT model to the lineup. The XT is essentially a loaded XS with a 210-hp engine replacing the 165-hp motor.

Pros:
  • Standard all-wheel drive, two engine choices, availability of upscale features, class-leading crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Price can be higher than most of the competition, tight on legroom in the backseat.

  • Just what I was looking for... - 2004 Subaru Forester

I do not give this vehicle 10s across the board, but I give it a 10 in what I was looking for. It is not fast. It produces lots of wind noise. It doesnt corner particularly well. It does provide amazing versatility, functional all-wheel drive, and plenty of room for storage. I am an outdoorsy type. I take this vehicle camping, hunting, fishing, biking, and for long distance traveling. I have driven this through sand, mud and water. I accidentally went through an innocuous looking puddle that came up over the hood, and the Forester pulled right through. Am very happy with the Forester and will drive it until the wheels fall off, or I do, whichever comes first.

I just traded in my 98 Volvo S70T5A for the 04 XT PP. The XT wallows less around curves and has less lag. The XT just wants to go. The auto is well matched with the engine. Its a blast to drive and has tons of utility that my Volvo didnt have. Another plus is that the insurance is just a touch more than I was paying on my 6 year old Volvo! Go figure. I gave up a touch of luxury for way more grins!

Looking to get a new truck til my nephew showed up with a Forester, we read the review in Comsummer Report and took one for a ride. That was it. We couldnt find anything we didnt like. I was set on a 5 spd. but the auto with the 4 cyl was so quick and steady I was sold. Hard part was which color to get. There is plenty of room in the back to haul things and it doesnt seem to balk at a load of a few hundred pounds like some 4 cyl will. Great height for getting into and good head space and leg room in the back seat. Seats have good support. Handled great in heavy rain w/ flooded road. Love my car!!!

  • Such a deal - 2004 Subaru Forester

Ive had my XT for nearly a year now and have loved every minute with it. Ive had absolutely no problems with the car although I think the dealship experience could be better. I knew when I purchased the car the gas mileage would be lower than I like, however I am willing to make the sacrifice (I commute to work via train, so when I drive the car its for fun). The Subaru Forester XT is the best purchase Ive made in a long time and I got below invoice. Such a deal...

  • I Would Consider Another Forester - 2004 Subaru Forester

I really like my Forester. However, I never thought when buying my car that I should sit in the back. Just to see how I liked the room, etc. Well, my Forester is wonderful except for the back seat. There is no leg room whatsoever. Not even for a small child let alone an adult. My Forester does great with snow, icy conditions, etc. Handles very well on hills. I would buy another Forester again without any hesitation.

fairly quiet ride especially compared to the CR-V. nice smooth acceleration uphill. doesnt mind "high speed!" lots of nice extras come standard. SO FAR SO GOOD...ONLY 600 MILES!

  • The Little Old Ladys Turbo - 2004 Subaru Forester

I love this car. I went from the hard to get into Jeep to this comfortable smaller SUV. It drives like a baby carriage and and flies up the onramp. Perfect car for freeway driving and looks good too.

Wonderful small SUV. Fast, comfortable, solid and safe. You cant ask for much more.

  • Fun to drive - 2004 Subaru Forester

Moves well in the snow is reasonably comfortable on long trips. has ample storage for a vehicle of this size. Gas mileage is horrible. The final drive ratio is far too low. 20 MPG on freeway at 80 miles per hour. Had a Passat GLX that got 26 at same cruising speed with V-6 same basic power. Reliability has been spotless thru 53K miles. Service costs have been very reasonable. Paint is not terribly chip resistant and scratch resistant not up to expectation level. One squeek in the interior since new which is due to dash and a pillar sleeve contact. Wind noise at speed. Engine noise minor. I would buy again

My Forester Turbo is the greatest vehicle Ive ever owned. She has lots of pizzaz, getting me in and out of traffic with ease. If I ever have to replace her it will be with another Forester Turbo.
