This Year's Model Updates:

After 12 long years in production, Saturn is finally retiring its aging S-Series sedan and coupe in favor of the all-new Saturn Ion sedan and innovative quad coupe.

Pros:
  • Innovative rear-access doors on coupe, customer-focused dealers, numerous personalization options, great cargo capacity.
Cons:
  • Build quality not up to segment standards, unusual styling, lack of established service and repair history.

  • Great car! - 2003 Saturn ION

I really like this car. I was really suprised to find that a Saturn was this good. The service at the dealership is wonderful, even at a different dealership than the one where it was purchased. I am very satisfied and will only buy Saturns from now on.

Ion 1 is a fantastic improvement over SL, especially with peppy 2.2L DOHC engine, finally 5A option, and fun CD player. Love electric power steering, and A/C doesnt drag cars performance down like old SL. Nothing but rave reviews from everyone so far.

The car has been really fun to drive. The turning radius is great. I have had some small problems with the cruise control, but Saturn was quick to fix. There is a lot of head room and leg room even in the back seat. The trunk is very large and the back seat also folds down to increase space for the trunk. The engine is a bit loud when accelerating, but is quiet when up to speed. The 4cl engine has great acceleration and pep, which I found lacking in other comparable cars.

Just came back from a trip to Eastern Kentucky. The curves combined with hills can be down right scarry for those who are not used to it. The car had descent pickup but could not turn the corners as well as the Chevy Astro I was trying to follow. High roof line also does not help with mpg. Car has great bottem end torque in the standard but the automatic acts like it has a stall converter and is always in the 3 grand to 4 grand in rpm for just normal cruising.

  • First new car, first Saturn, great car - 2003 Saturn ION

This is a great car. A lot of car for the price. It is very fun to drive and has great pickup and handling. I see a lot of complaints about the styling but it isnt as weird as people are saying. The center-mounted instrument panel is easier to see since I dont have to look through the steering wheel. The auto headlights and anti-lockout are nice features as are the vents for rear passengers. I didnt get the top of the line stereo but it still sounds great with the bass turned up. The engine is remarkably quiet although the 16" tires are not. Fuel economy is already great even though its not at optimum levels yet.

So far so good. Road tripped in the first 2,000 and it was awesome. Mileage was stellar. Tunes were cranked....to tune down interior occupants. I only got one complaint. That stupid right turn signal light goes out every 4.5 weeks and fixes the second the dealer looks at it. Other than that, excellent buy.

Lives up to Saturns standard of providing the best value for your automobile purchase dollar. It is cute, zippy and practical.

The car has yet to let me down. I have had several trips to the dealer, and almost always got the car back while I waited. The free rental with my service contract made any overnight problems bearable. The tires seem to be about gone. This is a little better than I expected for OEM tires. The 16" low profile tires gave the car the best handling I have has with a small car. The transmission shifts good most of the time, but occasionaly hunts when the acceleration drops off near its shift point. The front seats have a tremendous amount of leg room. However, the rear seat passenger can loose all of their leg room to the front seat. The car is comfortable on long trips.

Rides good, nice exterior style. The engine has enough power, big trunk. Ignition switch went bad twice and it seems to be going bad again. The interior panels fall off or come loose easily. The heater core went bad. Lots of rattles and wind noise. Radiator sensor went bad.
