This Year's Model Updates:

Changes for 1997 are few. Supercharged Bonnevilles get a new transmission, a new Delco/Bose premium sound system is optional on the SSE, and the EYE CUE heads-up display has a new motorized adjustment feature. Two new exterior colors, a new interior color and a new interior fabric visually liven up the aging Bonneville.

Pros:
  • Full-size comfort, good value, excellent powertrains, can equip SE like go-faster SSEi for less
Cons:
  • Dated overdone styling

  • Sporty Look and Ride - 1997 Pontiac Bonneville

Smooth ride, reliable car. Took a chance and bought used at 108K for $3K. Had to replace power steering pump and rack and pinion, because someone poured something in there. Cost $550. Relay switch burned out and interior fan would not cut off. Cost $125. Other than that..great car..good gas mileage and leather is holding up not too bad. Has a CD player and cup holder and back seat has a little fold out to put longer item in the trunk. It juts out into the back seat. Rear bumper paint worn, but all else good. Our color is plum. Driver side mirror loose, vibrates just a little. Dash lights are sporty red at night.

Great car! Rides/drives great. Good power & comfortable. At 75000 miles engine threw a rod. Replaced engine and still driving, had no choice since I just purchased it months ago. Still like the drive & ride. Engine developed antifreeze leak. Mechanic said he had seen more like this recently.

  • A Bonneville in Colorado?!?! - 1997 Pontiac Bonneville

Never thought Id own anything less than an SUV for my skiing / biking / camping activites, but I have to admit I love my car! I have yet to see another Bonneville with a roof rack system - who says a sedan isnt cool?. Bought it used w/68k miles and it has over 77k now. Am just now having to replace brakes, oilpan/gasket (due to slight leak) & serp belt. This car has been great! Good traction in Colorados snowy conditions and is great in the mountains & on long road trips. If only the cup holders were more convenient and the trunk, when open, didnt slide rain & snow into the trunk. Not perfect, but pretty darn close!

Bought the car two years ago, commute 320 miles round trip daily. We average 30 mpg, some days better, some days worse. Im a bigger fellow, small cars dont cut it, not on this commute! Only car I have that comes close to the comfort is my 91 Grand Marquis, and in the winter, the front wheel drive is a must over the mountain passes we traverse. In hot weather, the car quits. Always at speed on the interstate. Put it in neutral while coasting, and the engine comes back to life, and away we go. Just turned 255 thousand miles, and I dont know what to do to kill this car. Love it, but its been around too long. Just dont know what Id replace it with!

My dear bonneville just crossed its 174000 mile mark. Not a single major repair since I owned it. I have driven this car for Boston to San Francisco and back. The most comfy ride ever. You can never go back to a smaller car once you have driven this. It gives me 26+ mpg. A no-fatigue drive. I have used and abused this car and it sure takes a beating. The car fits a 10 ft long piece of 2x4 lumber completely with the trunk closed. Highly recommended.

  • Our Bonneville SSE comments! - 1997 Pontiac Bonneville

Had terrible experience with the Goodyear tires that came on the car. Goodyear nor Pontiac would make them good even though we were told they were defective. Had to go to outside sources for a decent ride. Wheels were also defective. They pitted (all 4) and Dealer replaced in warranty. The interior dash area is not practical. The trunk lid (after a rain or wash) drips water into the trunk area when it is open. Other than these few things, we have enjoyed the car. The interior is very comfortable riding. The design and changing color paint job is very attractive. Original owners

This is my second Bonneville. I did have to replace the water pump, but that has been the only unscheduled maintenance on the 2 cars. This car looks good, is fun to drive, is very comfortable and extremely practical given all the space it offers. I wont buy my third Bonneville because of the redesign in 2000.

My parents bought this car new and when they passed, I kept it as I love this car. Very comfortable interior and heads up display is great! Drive is fun and have had no major issues since day 1.
