This Year's Model Updates:

Changes for 1997 are few. Supercharged Bonnevilles get a new transmission, a new Delco/Bose premium sound system is optional on the SSE, and the EYE CUE heads-up display has a new motorized adjustment feature. Two new exterior colors, a new interior color and a new interior fabric visually liven up the aging Bonneville.

Pros:
  • Full-size comfort, good value, excellent powertrains, can equip SE like go-faster SSEi for less
Cons:
  • Dated overdone styling

I bought 97 Bonnie with only 34k and have driven it 10k. It looks great, handles well and really wants to run. It has good power to fuel economy trade off. (23 MPG in mixed driving and 27 MPG on the highway) The intake manifold gasket and water pump were replaced by the dealer at the time I bought the car. I have found out that the intake manifold gasket was poorly designed and the replacement gasket is now made of a different material. Everyone that buys a used GM 3800 or 3400 V6 should check to see if the gasket has been replaced. The part is not expensive but it requires a fair amount of labor.

Smooth, quiet, powerful. Looks nice and rides nice. Not mushy like the other full size GM front wheel drives. Handles well. Good mileage for bigger car. 26MPG city/highway and 30+ highway MPG. I bought it with 80,000 on the clock and you couldnt take it away!

Alternator bearing failed(in Warranty) Water pump failed (36000 miles) Engine light on (42000 miles)Was told EGR valve def.but was told could be cleaned ($200)-Fixed. Told engine control module needed replacement. Was told air conditioner comnpressor bearing was failing-should be replaced soon (part cost $687)If bearing freezes belt will jump off, disabling car. Fingers crossed re.intake manifold gasket failure.

This is the second Bonneville that I purchased and had nothing but problems with it. The transmission and alternator has been replaced twice plus other sundry problems. It has been for sale for 2 months with no bites. I received money back from Pontiac because of all the problems.

  • What GM was, and is not today - 1997 Pontiac Bonneville

This is the most reliable car on the planet. I now have 185,255 miles on it and has never had more than $500 worth of repairs since I bought it 10 years ago new with 7 miles on it. Id recommend this 1997 to buy used over the other two newer ones any day. The 1997 "3800" engine is what Japanese quality motors are today.
