This Year's Model Updates:

The Xterra has been fully redesigned for 2005 with a new platform, a more powerful V6 and a more spacious interior.

Pros:
  • One of the most powerful V6s in the class, above average off-road capability, solid passenger room, innovative cargo features.
Cons:
  • Still not what we would call refined on the street, a few instances of low-grade interior materials.

  • How an Alternator Died at 21,00 Miles! - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

After having a 2000 Nissan Xterra that never ever needed a repair, I purchased the new one in 2005, all two months of them. Now at 21,000- miles, my alternator and idling arm are dead. Go figure. Dealership thought the progressive noise it made was lack of oil! Wrong! New dealership cant explain why it happened. Neither can I or the next dealership I may have to go to,,,probably NOT Nissan!

  • 5 year review of 2005 Nissan Xterra SE - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I bought this vehicle new, ordered in the color and trim level that I wanted. In the 5 years I have owned it I have had to replace (under warranty - the fuel tank sensor, a u-joint). The CD player quit working just off of warranty and I havent changed it as I use an ipod with FM modulator. The vehicle overall have been fantastic. I have put a couple hundred thousand hassle free kms on it and it hasnt had any more problems than any other vehicle I have ever owned. Its still solid, tight and peppy. Excellent for a small family, great for work use in the oilfield. Reliable.

  • Fun to drive - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

Bought this a year ago at 67K miles. In that time Ive put about 20K on it. This thing is a lot of fun to drive. It will get up and go! Turns on a dime for an SUV. Seats 5 comfortably. The rear and passenger seats fold down easily and allow for a lot of cargo. It rides nicely and is very comfortable both on and off road. By off road I mean actual trails. Mine has VDC and it works great in snow & mud. Great visibility in all directions. The interior is cheap plastic. Things slide around in the “trunk.” Tire Pressure siren goes off a lot. I’m not going to overinflate the tires so I live with it. I check the trans fluid for murkiness often just to be on the safe side. Haven’t had an issue yet.

  • Best Value SUV, Most Improved - 2005 Nissan Xterra

The redesigned Xterra is one of the best values in the market. With the new 265hp engine power is no longer a problem. Excellent engine braking with the manual transmission makes the HDC unneeded, glad I didnt get it. Gearing is low enough for actual off-road use, great power in the low end. The clutch cancel and locking rear make this vehicle a great value without expensive add-ons that other comparable vehicles require for off roading. Wind noise is greatly reduced from previous design overall much quieter ride. Built on a true truck platform this vehicle rides like it should, not like a car. What makes this one really stand out for me is attention to details such as wiper function.

  • Fun New 05 X - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

We just picked up our new 05 Xterra offroad 4x4. This vehicle is so much fun to drive. I was thinking about an 04 but as soon as I got in the drivers seat of the 05 I could feel the power difference. The X sits up high so you can get a clear view of the road ahead. The ride is smooth and the handling is superb. The X turns on a dime. You can get a great deal from the dealership if you do your homework first, I know because I got the vehicle for invoice price. I love the new Xterra.

  • great rugged truck - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

The Nissan xterra has been a great truck, 70,000 miles and no problems, still have the factory breaks, just now had to replace the tires. Truck does great in all weather, im in the army and currently living in Kansas, lots of snow and ice in the winter, truck does better than a lot of 4x4 trucks, I pass them all the time on the roads stuck in the snow, mpg not as good as I would like but is not bad considering the engine size and h. P. All and all great truck!

  • not too great - 2005 Nissan Xterra

this suv is good for offroad, if u plan on driving everyday make sure u have ALOT of extra money for gas. It is unbelievable how much gas this car eats if i would have known i would not have purchased. It slides all over the place in the snow unless u put it in 4 wheel drive! even if its less then an inch of snow!!! u def. cannot fit 3 people in the back seat unless they are super skinny! so unless ur specific use for this car is off road i dont recommend it

  • Nice vehicle - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I planned on driving a number of SUVs before purchasing one. The first one I drove was the Xterra and I loved it. Bought it on the spot and got a great year end deal. I would recommend this truck to anyone looking for a smaller more rugged SUV with plenty of power. Upgraded from a Jeep Wrangler. 100% would recommend.

  • Best SUV ever - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

This 2006 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year boasts a powerful 4.0-liter, 265-horsepower DOHC V-6 engine that puts out 284 pound-feet of torque and is fun to get dirty. The Xterra will suffer most at the gas pump. The car gets an EPA-tested 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, but those who haul heavy stuff or play a lot off-road will see those numbers go even lower. Front-passenger seats have decent support and are large enough to accommodate most adults, but the backseat in particular is small and cramped, and it offers little legroom. The most disappointing thing about the 2006 Nissan Xterra by far is its gas mileage.

  • ugly xterra - 2005 Nissan Xterra

my wife and her female friends really like it...the 265 hp v6 performs strong, its an odd (unattractive) vehicle, cheap plastic interior, the ride reminds me of a mid 70s cj-5 i had years ago, too high price for as cheap as this X is constructed, would not recommend this vehicle.......
