Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

So far, Ive only owned my Xterra for a little over a month. This is the most fun behind the wheel Ive ever had. The car is responsive in every way possible. Im impressed with the inside storage spaces and the ability to tie down gear in the back area. I like the idea of four plug ins for electrical items. The Xterra has accesories that can make this vehicle a true sports auto. Has good looks and the ability to take you anywhere and truly enjoy the experience and make you want to do it again, and again, and again.. Had I known about an Xterra, I would have given up pickups a long time ago!!!

I realize that fuel economy is something you usually trade for the power you get from an SUV, but the Nissan Xterra drinks gas like water, and still has trouble picking up enough speed to merge onto a highway without getting rear ended. This truck is competent to get me to and from work everyday, but Im hardly impressed by the way the engine races before kicking in everytime I ask it to get me someplace in a hurry. I reccomend going for the supercharged model. Also, why does the steering wheel have to be so close to the seat? There is barely enough room for your legs, even after you adjust it.

  • I love this Xterra - 2004 Nissan Xterra

I have owned Nissan Vehicles for over 25 years and I LOVE them. I live in the northern west tip of NY state and we have SNOW!!! I got tired of never having a secure feeling in a car on bad roads so I traded in my Maxima for this Xterra. The very next day we had 8 inches of snow and the 20 mile drive to work was SO MUCH SAFER! The interior of this vehicle is pretty well bare bones, buut I have all that I want...cruise, air, 4wd and SPACE to carry my 25 lb bags of birdfood as well as my dogs!! I LOVE this vehicle as it suits my size as well...51" and 120 lbs. I can handle the vehicle and not feel overwhelmed (as I do in my husbands Ford F150). I dont mind the winter now!

  • Real SUV - 2006 Nissan Xterra

Xterra S 4x2 with autmatic. This truck is the most fun to drive out of any I have ever driven. The throttle response is excellent. The engine outperforms any SUV Ive driven. Its not a bad gas guzzler, although it burns more fuel than a Ford Escape or Jeep Liberty. it pays off from the Fords and the Jeeps when it comes to reliability. If you buy any truck like one of those, itll be in the shop more, and youll pay for it there. Besides, the Xterra is much more versatile for any type of driving than those are. the fold flat seats have been perfect for me. This SUV is exactly what I need. Its got all the basics, organized so that its design is effective for a daily driver.

  • its a 4 speed automatic wasnt in selection but its great - 2000 Nissan Xterra

i love my xterra she has a bumpy ride but its a truck frame so it is designed to be tough not smooth it runs like a beast but as with most v6 suvs it feels underpowered on acceleration up hills on freeway onramps but if you give it a good amount of gas pedal push it will downshift and get up there it looks great to me definitely distinctive the interior is a little bland but well built and comfy seats sit low in front so it feels like sittin in a sporty car thats lifted 10" because you can see above most things blind spots are minimal which is good it has alot of storage space and is well built and fun to drive especially off road where it loves to be great suv i would buy again

  • wouldnt recommend - 2003 Nissan Xterra

I would not recommend this vehicle for anyone with small children or anyone that plans to be using it on long road trips. The ride is so bumpy and on long trips it can get very uncomfortable. If I had to do over I would buy something more expenisve with a smoother ride and something that was quieter on the highway.

  • So Far So Good, But... - 2003 Nissan Xterra

Ive had my Xterra for just over a week and I love it so far. Still, I REALLY wish the steering wheel tilted up higher. Im 64/300 pounds and the extra room would come in handy getting in/out of the car. Other than that, I have plenty of leg room. Also, my gas mileage seems to be pretty marginal at best. Im hoping that it will get better as the engine gets broken.

  • Low price alternative to the Toyota FJ - 2007 Nissan Xterra

I initially went out to buy a Toyota FJ Cruiser, but when they would not budge on the price, I looked elsewhere and found the Nissan Xterra. We bought this as a 3rd vehicle for the winter. This SUV has everything we wanted out of a 3rd vehicle, comfortable seating for 5 people with good leg room, on the fly 4WD, and plenty of good power from the engine. My wife was hesitant to buy this Xterra, but now she loves it. She likes the way it feels like a bigger SUV than it actually is. Very smooth ride, and the S model has all the options we wanted.

I liked the look, drove nice and had less body role than my old car did. I was worried about the power, but the supercharger gives you that extra thrust to get you on the highway much easier. I dont think the gas mileage is the best, but its about the same as my previous car (V6 3.1liter), so I dont notice it as much. Interior is great, wish there was a better place for change (I end up putting it in the cupholder). I have not had that many miles on it but I love it.
