Overview & Reviews
The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.
The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

Utility and off road - 2006 Nissan Xterra
By mkrash84 - July 15 - 1:20 pmOn road: avg 20.5 city/up to 24 hwy mpg. Great utility vehicle, have carried large fridge, washer/dryer, many other home remodeling items. Long road trips are nice with wife and 2 large dogs. Great engine performance, able to sleep in back diagonally (Im 62"). 4x4: have done gnarly 4x4: ground clearance decent, articulation decent, tracks well, departure angle fair, in 4 Low, throttle not sensitive enough, 2Low should be geared lower, shocks OK, rear bottoms out easily (suspension design issue), stock tires fair. Not on par with Jeep off road, but a very good starting point, will have to modify for serious 4x4. Had to replace clutch at 17k, but under warranty. No other problems.

After 5000 miles - 2003 Nissan Xterra
By Banker John - July 12 - 10:00 amI just passed 5000 miles on my Xterra. I have found that the more I drive it, the more I like it (this is my 11th new car, but my first truck/SUV) Very solid and comfortable for a truck. My wife went on a short trip (400 miles round trip) with two adult lady friends and found the ride to be very pleasant. Utility for hauling is very good. Folding the rear seats does let you haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood (with the hatch open). I have an XE 4x4 with an automatic. Id save my money and avoid buying the SE or the supercharged version. Absolutely zero problems so far.

Xtremely Happy Owner!! - 2003 Nissan Xterra
By XterraUTE - July 12 - 10:00 amIm an extremely happy owner of this vehicle. I have done my research with other SUVs and came up liking the Xterra. This a very capable and solidly build SUV, the vehicle does double duty for me as my wife utilized it as a daily driver and then for family recreation utilizing it for camping/fishing go offroad to some places (exploring). So far we luv the Xterra and hope to enjoy its usage. Highly recommend the top of the line model SE/SC model.

Xterra007 - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By Xterra007 - July 5 - 10:00 amI bought this car for my wife. For her this was love at first sight. The SUV really looks good. Problems: Just couple of days after we bought the Xterra, I noticed that transmission wasn’t working right (Engine Lights showed up), SUV had stumbling problem while changing gears. I took it to the dealer, they found out that there is a speed sensor, which was not working. They had to order the part, which took couple of days and finally I got the Xterra back, so far it is working fine. This is bad for Nissan reputation.

One of the best SUVs - 2003 Nissan Xterra
By xterra_ep - July 4 - 4:40 amExceent SUV, if you take a little care of it: First of all change to Bilsteins - it will change your driving experience 180 degrees. Second, if you over 100K change timing belt, all other belts; watter pump, termostat. Third, make sure your brakes are good. Now you have a fantastic car - you have to invest a bit - but then you have a true 4x4 that will go anywhere, will start any time, and will drive and feel like brand new. Or much better than many brand new cars, suvs in the $20K range. My wife wants me to change my car to twice more expensive and more cool - I love this SUV - I put some sweat to it and it is perfect now! Love it!

Glad I bought it - 2009 Nissan Xterra
By Andy Kuchta - July 4 - 12:36 amI have been a Nissan Frontier owner since 1995 and have been very satisfied with the quality and engineering of Nissan vehicles. Recently I began looking at the X- Terra. I was happy to see that Nissan has continued with their quality in workmanship and "thinking of the little things" like the door in the skid plate that allows you access to the oil filter when changing your oil. The interior is well designed and the ride is comfortable. For anyone looking at a mid sized SUV Id give the X Terra more than just a passing look.

Grows on you. - 2004 Nissan Xterra
By Xterra2003 - June 30 - 2:00 amAt first I had some issues with the Xterra. I thought that fuel economy was bad and that it had a tough ride. I found these 2 issues to be the only problems with the vehicle and they turned out to be personal issues. I bought a truck based SUV and I have owned cars in the past. I had to go through a learning curve and after I have accepted this, I really love the truck-key is truck. It is a great buy and I am glad I bought it. The R.F. stereo is excellent too.
