Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

I was in the market for a Tahoe. I noticed the Xterras popping up everywhere and they really caught my eye. I called my buddy at the dealership, kept one for a 4 day weekend and it just drew to me. I knew one was meant to be on my insurance ID card, and now it is. I still have my Jeep and this new Xterra SC. Thanks Mike at Mossy Nissan!

This is my wifes car. We purchased it for our move to N.VA from TX, because we would be back in snowy country in winter. She loves this vehicle, and it performs best in her hands. Her last trip to GA produced 23 mpg, with the "service engine soon" light on. I expect to keep this vehicle for many years unless gas goes over $5/gal. It is highly dependable, and perfect for our travels. Many will complain about performance/comfort issues, but most of these are people who are ignorant of what this thing is. It is a TRUCK! It is supposed to be tough. Its supposed to be rugged. The commercial says it best, "Everything you need. Nothin you dont." Thank you.

  • After Extensive Testing.... - 2006 Nissan Xterra

I bought my X in June of 07 with 18,000 miles on it. Since then, I have driven this thing almost 30,000 miles, from Chicago, to northern Michigan, to Myrtle Beach, to northern Ohio, in light floods, blizzards, and sand. No trouble digging itself out of 3 foot snow drifts, even a 4 foot ditch (when I was stupid, and turned the traction control off). Wonderful comfort and easy to pack for long trips. I tested the "top impact" rating with a telephone pole last winter. (Black ice, my fault, not the Xs.) Kept me and my passengers safe, roof held up no problem. Holds up very well in heavy summer traffic, 30 below temps, blizzards, floods, and anything else you can think of to throw at it.

I chucked a Dodge SLT Nitro with 5,000 miles, traded for the SE Xterra, what a beautiful unit! Smooth, fast, tight and functional. When I nurse it along, I can get 23 mpg @ 70 mph. Still under 500 miles, I bet it can do better. This Xterra is so superior.

This is the first vechicle I have bought that after about 1 year I wasnt tired of it. I plan on keeping this one until it wears out, then I buy another.

  • Why I love Nissans--Xterra is Tops! - 2002 Nissan Xterra
    By -

Xterra is AWESOME. I love the power, the styling--everything. I even get good gas mileage. I averaged 330/mpg in my Maxima; now Im at 300. I LOVE the turning radius, the extra space, dual cupholders and the multiple outlets. Sunroof could be better and I dont like the two non-knobs next to the power outlet above the radio. My sometimes only regret is that I didnt get the SC, but there were none in my color choice when I went to purchase.

  • My second Xterra (after the original) - 2006 Nissan Xterra

Having previously owned the original model, I was not looking to buy another one until I test drove this beast. I was so impressed by the power and torque and the fact that the salesman let me drive it home for a whole day! That night I took it close by to a favorite hiking trail and was impressed by the off-road capability and just the overall comfort and convenience. Ive now had it for 2 years and still loving it. Ive taken it to numerous camping/backpacking trip, off-roading, hauling furniture and it has passed with flying colors. This is one vehicle that lives up to its ads and commercials-great job Nissan!!

  • So far, so good - 2004 Nissan Xterra

Ive only owned the vehicle for a few months, but Ive been very satisfied. The downside is the gas milage being poor, but I expected that. The design of the Xterra is the best of its class. It is a true SUV lovers SUV, with its cargo rack, running boards, rugged look, etc. The price of the Xterra is very reasonable too. Also, I havent yet regreted not buying the FWD. Where I live, I dont usually need it.
