Overview & Reviews
The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.
The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

Toyota Guy loves this truck! - 2007 Nissan Xterra
By kycarguy - June 5 - 2:01 pmIm Toyota. I think the Tacoma is the best gasoline truck ever built. With that being said, the 05-10 Tacoma and 4-runners are too darn expensive. The 07 Nissan Xterra SE was a great compromise. Im 63" and have plenty of room in the front. The transmission could use the extra gear though. It likes fuel but Im pedal to the metal man. My VDC light comes on and stays on from time to time but when I test it, it seems to work properly. Im at 104k. No other issues. Rides smooth. Fairly quiet. Tons of cargo space/hidden compartments. Love how it looks. And it was half the price of a Toyota truck with similar age and miles. I wish it was the off road package but the SE is not a bad trim level.

Love our X! - 2003 Nissan Xterra
By mistfairy - June 5 - 1:46 amThis suv is fun to drive! It has lots of room for all your stuff, even when we had our first child. Infant and toddler car seats fit - but snugly. Unfortunatly the back doors do not open wide enough. It can be tricky getting an infant seat in and out. Has enough pick up and go to really move.

Still happy 4 years later - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By Chip - June 4 - 7:50 pmI bought my XT used in 05. Had 24K on it at the time, and Ive since added another 70K. It has been very dependable, and Ive only has to deal with general maintenance issues so far. I also find it funny that people are complaining about the fuel mileage. What did you expect? Its a big box sitting on a truck chassis. If youre worried about fuel economy, buy a sedan. Ive actually found it to get decent mileage for what it is. Theres a ton of space, it tows well, and looks good.

Molten Lava Supercharger - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By Jarrod - May 30 - 2:00 amSmoother ride than I thought it would be. Best looking SUV in my opinion. Seats look cheap, but are sporty and very comfortable. Plenty of room and back seat passengers can finally see the road as well as the front passengers can see it. Supercharged power is impressive. I was taking it easy on the hwy and looked down and was surprisingly driving at 80 mph.

Trusted and Reliable - 2000 Nissan Xterra
By Clyde in Chatt Town - May 29 - 2:00 amWe have owned our Xterra since 2000 when we bought it new. Now, just rolling over 180,000 miles, it has never been in the shop for more than a check-up. Routine oil changes and new plugs, wires, and fluids at 100,000 miles is all that has ever been done. Recently had the air go out, but after ten years and 180,000 miles I have no complaints with the build quality on this one! If youre looking at buying one used, I would not be intimidated by high miles. Certainly mine has been super-reliable so far, and I would not hesitate to take it on long trips. Super reliable!

Terrible Experience! - 2004 Nissan Xterra
By sandra87 - May 25 - 3:50 amI used to own this car and even though its great looking and fun to drive, my engine blew... timing belt was ripped off and they told me they needed to replace whole engine! Just reading from other reviews I see this is a common problem for 2004 Nissan Xterra so just be careful when buying!!!!

Couldnt be more pleased - 2006 Nissan Xterra
By xterrajess - May 23 - 2:46 pmThis is the best vehicle. So incredibly reliable. Some fun facts: - In 7 years of ownership, Ive never taken it to the shop for anything other than the regular oil change and tire rotation. - Front 2 seats are very comfortable. I get many comments on this. - Steering wheel offers some resistance when turning but is OK. - Stylish - Decent gas mileage for the year and type of vehicle - Lots of trunk space, tons when the back seats are down. I can fit a corner piece of furniture in the back standing upright in this thing. - Dont have to slam the doors for them to close - Nice blinker sound - Replacements parts (from minor fender benders & whatnot) are pretty cheap

200K miles on my 00 X - 2000 Nissan Xterra
By calabash_72 - May 22 - 9:44 amWell, I bought my 2000 Nissan Xterra in 2003, shortly after my baby girl was born and I needed 4 doors instead of my extend cab suicide doors on my Silverado. I am going on 12 years owning and 200,000 miles. The cons-bad gas mileage, avg 12-14mpg, cold air intake gave me +1mpg. Really underpowered. Only thing is @ 145k my timing belt broke, supposed to change @ 125k anyway. Distributor went out @ 195k. Other than that, just normal maint wear and tear. I cannot really complain on cost of repairs since there have been so few.
