Overview & Reviews
The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.
The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

Bumpy - 2001 Nissan Xterra
By RAS - August 8 - 2:00 amThis was my first suv. In the begining it was great in the snow and nice sitting up high. Then I noticed that the front driver and passenger windows vibrated when down an inch or so. Was told this was normal by 3 dealerships. After about a year the suv novelty has worn off. This is a bumpy, gass- guzzler with cheap interior plastic. Dont get me wrong it looks great, just drives like crap. If your looking for an suv around $25,000 and need off road prowess, this is probably the way to go. If you dont plan much off-road actvity, can spare the room and want decent mileage, comfort, and handling, try the Excape, CRV, RAV4 or Liberty.

Update Review - 2007 Nissan Xterra
By Hiker / Camper - August 6 - 11:03 amMy Xterra now has 36,000 miles on it. At 29,500 miles the fuel level sending unit and tank seal had to be replaced as the gas gauge stopped functioning. At 35,000 miles the original battery was replaced and toe-in adjusted. The original BF Goodrich Long Trail tires are approaching replacement time as are the brake pads. My Xterra has performed well, continues to handle well, gets expected gas mileage, and continues to be a reliable vehicle. Handles back roads well, although it still has not been tested by anything exceptionally rugged. I have diligently followed the maintenance schedule, including filter and fluid replacement as required on time. Happy Xterra owner so far.

Awesome Ride - 2006 Nissan Xterra
By shinner69 - August 2 - 8:56 pmRecently purchased a new Xterra after trading in my 2005 Mustang. The Mustang was ok, just too small. The Xterra has a ton of room to carry all your stuff and is just as fun to drive. The power of the engine is awesome and it handles very well on the road. My only complaint is the fuel economy...I am only averaging about 15 mpg in the city. Other than that, great car. My girlfriend has a 2002 with aver 150,000 miles and she has never has any major problems.

Great for my "mid life crisis" - 2005 Nissan Xterra
By Cindy Smith - August 2 - 12:43 amIm in my final years of toting my teens around to soccer etc., but Im still having a blast driving this SUV. I teach high-school, and the kids think I have a neat car. It keeps me young!! Its almost paid for, and I plan to keep it awhile. Ive taken several long trips and it is very comfortable for everyone.

The war pony - 2004 Nissan Xterra
By Grandma - July 31 - 4:46 amI LOVE my Xterra. I call it the War Pony. Because it,ll go anywhere I ask it to, at any time, in any weather. I used to own a full size lifted Bronco. I am now a 52 year old grandmother and needed a smaller 4 door. I did not think any thing could replace my big truck. Then I found the xterra. I strap my grand children into the back and away we go. No more getting out to lock in hubs. The ground clearence is fine the power is perfect. The interior cleans well. The gas mileage is good. Drivers comfort is great. Room in the back seat is good. I can see all around . the sound syatem bumps too. I LOVE my War Pony!!! I would recomend the Xterra to any one who wants a true 4x4with extras buy it!!!

Love Me X - 2004 Nissan Xterra
By Shrubber - July 6 - 10:00 amI used Edmunds when looking for a vehicle so I thought I would return the favor. I have only had my X for about 4 months but I really like it a lot. I have had to take it back for minor non- mechanicalwarranty work twice, the lumbar support in the driver seat and the passenger window, other than that love it! I think it is important to know I was in a small pick up before. Gas mileage is about 17 for me in the city. This isnt a race car by any means but I think it is adequately powered. Love the exterior looks, and all back seat passengers have complimented the higher up seating. Problem is there are so many of them on the road now!!

number 1 - 2004 Nissan Xterra
By pollo_fuego - July 6 - 10:00 amThe Nissan Xterra, is buy far the best off-roading/in-town suv in its price range. Although lacking in comfort during long road trips, the standard V6 offers enough power to get you anywhere. Good preformance on and offroad, I personaly have left many of my friends SUVs in the dust, weather on or off road. The best choice for the active, go get it lifestyle. I love it!

watch out baby - 2005 Nissan Xterra
By Wendy - July 6 - 1:26 amAll the research on this vehicle was worth it. Ive enjoyed every minute of driving. Ive been off road and feel completely confident in every situation. This SUV handles great on and off road, the stereo is fantastic. I added my XM satellite radio. You can feel the bass under your seat. My 13 yo loves that! This SUV has the power to get on the freeway quick and handles great. I look forward to driving this SUV every day.
