Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

I just bought mine about a month ago, used with 28K on it. Its a fantastic SUV - very comfortable, great road manners, drives awesome. Seats are firm and comfortable, not a rattle in it at all.

Take a long test drive before you buy. The front seats are HORRIBLE!!! Learn from my mistake; look at all the others before you decide. Im getting 12-13MPG at best, and its not really very fun to drive on the highway. Not happy with this purchase.

We purchased it with 68,000 miles and now it has 135,000 miles and runs very well. We do have occasional issues that are costly (fuel pump, fuel pump wiring harness, brake work, shocks) but they are going to be problematic with any car with these miles. It feels a bit underpowered when we have our family of 4 in it but still maintains freeway speeds without problems. We have loved this car so far.

  • Some Xs are better than others, I wasnt lucky - 2004 Nissan Xterra

I bought my X in 2004, at first everything went great. I have 167 K miles on mine and it wasnt a walk in the park. Where do I start, at 120k miles i spent 1500 dollars repairing the entire cluth assy. At 130 K the entire brake system went to hell ( another 1200 dollars. at 135 k miles the shocks went to hell ( another 900 dollars). At 138k miles or so 150 to replace the liner. Long story short...I replaced the compressor ( 900 dollars) , the water pump ( 700 dollars) , I replaced the radio ( 130 dollars) , the catalyst converter ( 900 dollars or so) , I had to replace the starter ( 800 dollars) . Now at 167 K miles , the only thing I havent replaced is the cup holder..IT SUCKS!

  • Solid 4X4 - 2004 Nissan Xterra

I bought my Xterra after carefully researching the vehicle, and scrutinizing the condition of the car itself. For the most part, I agree with most of the reviews. The ride is a bit stiff, which is good for a true SUV. The steering can be a bit squirrely, especially at lower speeds, but it is fine once you adjust to it. One point I wholly agree with is the underpowered engine. A truck like this should have a 4.0 as base, not an upgrade. The interior is comfortable, if a little sparse, save for the power windows and locks. Id also like more up front storage. So despite its few shortcomings, its a great truck. I really, really like it. After all, Dogs love trucks!

  • Great SUV - 2000 Nissan Xterra
    By -

This SUV has been nothing but reliable for me over the past 2 years I have owned it. I havent had to take it in but one time for warrenty work, my CD player stopped working, but they replaced it after they got one in stock. It rides nice (truck like) and has very good visibility (especially from the back seats). The engine is a little underpowered though and some of the switches are placed in hard to reach places (cruise control on/off and rear wiper switch). All in all a great SUV for the price and with the superchargers on the newer 2002 models the power problem will be fixed.

  • Love this car!! - 2001 Nissan Xterra

I absolutely love this car!! I love the way the Xterra handles, it drives like a car on the road. Havent used it off road or in snow yet. I can never feel when I am speeding... the car drives so smoothly. The amount of room in this car is unbelievable... I can fit my whole life in this car. I like that the seat cushions come out of the car when you put the back seat down...allows more space than SUVs that have seats that just pull forward (like the pathfinder). I think the Xterra is the best value among SUVs. I cant imagine why anyone would purchase a pathfinder for $10,000 more than an Xterra.

  • left me stranded - 2005 Nissan Xterra

squeaks in back hatch recently fixed. squeaks and rattles in front right not checked yet...had to have computer replaced. Would not start or even turn over. Warranty covered all work. Not sure I made the right decision on trading in my 1991 Ranger.

  • Great Truck! - 2007 Nissan Xterra
    By -

This is a great truck. I traded in a Chevy Trailblazer. I dont do much off-roading, but I like have a truck for the versatility, occasional towing, and Im a truck guy not a car guy. The get-up-and-go is great, gas mileage is good. The previous owner had upgraded to a touchscreen Pioneer Navi/Stereo/Bluetooth & a Viper alarm w/ remote start. So the toys are fun and functional. Never wanted a navi before, but now Ill have one in every car I own! The armrest stinks :( too low and too small. Otherwise, extremely happy, great truck.

  • Outstanding vehicle for the price - 2006 Nissan Xterra

Ive put 11,000 miles on my Xterra S model so far with no problems whatsoever. This car is absolutely amazing in almost every aspect. The look and stance of it is obviously rugged and powerful, and the inside lends itself to functionality and practicality quite well. If youve got a lot of stuff to take with you, this is the SUV for you. Fantastic perfomance on and off road - Ive taken it four-wheeling in some pretty intense mud multiple times and it doesnt come close to losing traction. Gas mileage is disappointing, with my very best so far 18 mpg on the highway. Plastic material can seem a bit on the cheap side, especially the insides of the doors and the dash. Overall, though, a great buy.
