Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

  • Repairs Have Been Painful - 2006 Nissan Xterra

My Xterra is only 4 years old and Ive had to replace the fuel sensor (a year and a half before the recall) and now the radiator. Thank goodness I was able to get the full sensor reimbursement from Nissan but I pretty much had to call and threaten to file a written complaint just to get it. I have always enjoyed having Nissan cars but this is becoming painful and expensive. I wanna hang in there with my "black beauty" but one more major repair and well have to part ways (bye).

I love my Xterra and feel it is everything I expected it to be. I have yet to see how dependable it is, but if it is like the rest of the Nissans I have owned, no problems. I am not too keen on the comfort zone, but it was built for xtreme usage so I overlooked that aspect. I dont have the courage to take off road yet, but plan to soon. I dont think it gets near the gas mileage they claim it gets. All around this vehicle gets a darn good review from me.

My Xterra is fun to drive around town, on the highway, and off the pavement. I never have to worry about taking it into poor conidtions. With 4WD and a high clearance, snow, mud, and dirt roads are not an obstacle. There is plenty of room inside for the dog, groceries, or backpacking gear. And if you run out of room inside, theres always the rack up top. The Xterra is designed for adventure down to the last detail. Do not expect luxury here, just functionality. Lots of functionality.

At least, not from the beautifully designed Nissan Xterra that I purchased last year. I only wish I could say the same for the dealership that I bought it from. I financed the truck in June 2004 from I am still having problems with my dealership today. After my monthly payment being raised three times and the harrassing phone calls at work for more money I was almost fed up enough to just give up. All it takes though is a short drive in Xterra and the world is a much brighter and more exciting place. So I urge yall to proceed w/caution when it comes to Nissan dealers.

  • I love this truck! - 2007 Nissan Xterra

I just got my Xterra in solar yellow last week and I absolutely love it! The ride is super smooth, better than my friends sedans. Its also really quiet in the cabin for those long hauls. And the plastic lined cargo area is ideal for my three dogs. The roof toolbox even comes in handy for wet swimsuits, shoes, or anything stinky from the dogs. I have only had it for a few days and have already logged 400+ miles on it. I cant keep myself out of it!

  • Not what nissan advertise as an SUV... - 2007 Nissan Xterra

Had this vehicle for repairs under warranty twice a month during 36000 miles. Basically changed everything under warranty. Fixed window regulators, both seats replaced, a/c compressor, abs actuator, WHOLE rear axle, curtain airbags deployed at 12k miles driving in mud. Definitely not what Nissan advertises as off road vehicle. Engine idles bad even after doing a 400 dollar injection cleanup by dealer. gas mileage is really bad and lots of noise, clunking under body. Nissan North America service was horrible, had my car for a month because of airbag issues and not covered under warranty!!! Never ever gona buy another nissan.

Ive been driving it for almost a month now and my love for this beauty grows deeper and deeper everyday. Not to mention the fast acceleration, the high seat (yeah, i can see the rooftops of the most common suvs), but what made me love this car more is the attention that im getting from the other drivers/pedestrians. Just cant figure out what they think though but the fact that their heads turned in my direction is enough for me.

  • Love the New X - 2005 Nissan Xterra

Best SUV for my dollars. I owned a 4Runner, a Yukon and a CRV. The new Xterra is by far the best. Rugged yet comfortable, powerful yet economical, simple yet refined. Im getting a little over 20 mpg in combined driving with AC and couldnt be happier with the way it handles, drives and looks. A true SUV for on and off road. Nissan has built a winner.

Got my Xterra Jan 2001 and its the best vehicle Ive ever owned. Been to Nfld , Canada from Deep South Texas -8500 mi round trip & handled like a dream. I think a bigger engine is reqd, but I love my truck. We got the yellow and we still get admiring looks. Best brakes Ive ever experienced. For those who find the seats bad, get out and exercise more so you can make your fat butts smaller. Great on and off road...what a blast!! Solid as a rock and suspension is great. The roads down here should qualify as off roads.
