Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

I feel that the XTerra is the most bang for the buck. Interrior space is wonderful for a mid-size SUV. The lack of power for the 4-cylinder engine is not worth the cost savings. Get the 6 cylinder, super charged engine.

  • Wow I Love this Xterra! - 2008 Nissan Xterra

Decided on the Xterra after looking at Honda CR-V, Acura RDX, Toyota Highlander, etc. The Xterra may seem not fancy enough for some folks, but seriously its got everything you need. Ive been extremely pleased with this Xterra, its such a great all round vehicle, easy to drive and not a ginormous vehicle. Its straightforward, drives great and has not given me one moments trouble in 5 months of daily driving.

I wrote a note a while ago about my Xterra. We moved to Germany and the X has performed perfectly. The only issue I have with it is the trans. It is very difficult to shift into second gear. It sometimes makes a grinding noise as well. But it is not that serious of a problem yet. Over all a great vehicle and the size is perfect!

  • Lovin It!! - 2002 Nissan Xterra

I just got my X yesterday and had to do some driving. After puting on 400 miles in just under 24 hours I have to say I love this thing. It rides like a truck but fells really steady in the turns. I like the acceleration and the access to all guages and accessories. Gas milage is an issue at todays prices, but what the hell!! You only go around once. Overall, very happy with my choice.

Great offroad capability. It has handled everything Ive come across offroad with ease. I used to be a die- hard Jeep fan, but this vehicle changed me. Comfortable with multiple passengers and car seat. Plenty of storage in back and roof rack. 14,000 miles without a problem. We have owned other Nissans which have impressed us with their reliability and were betting our Xterra wont disappoint. Terrific SUV for the $

  • Great durability - light on design - 2010 Nissan Xterra
    By -

I have been buying Nissans since 1981 mostly for their engines. Generally they tend to be superior on durability but light on comfort and convenience. My Xterra is the first SUV I have owned. I bought the X model because I wanted a manual transmission but did not want to buy the more expensive off road. As usual the engine and transmission are excellent but poor design on comfort and convenience. I could not believe there is no side mirror control and no map light. No mirror or light in the visor. The storage compartments are poorly designed. These little things are not expensive but are very much appreciated by consumers. Nissan designers - get a clue!

  • Great Vehicle - 2010 Nissan Xterra

This vehicle is amazing. Since I purchased the Off Road version, I figured I was going to compromise ride quality and overall comfort. Nothing could be further from the truth. The ride quality is surprisingly comfortable, the seats sit well, and the Rockford Fosgate system kicks. The utility features of the vehicle are some of the best in the market. Ive even done a little of my own testing off road. This thing is amazing in the dirt and rocks. The 4LO and locking rear differential are easy to use and get you out of just about anything. Engine performance is impressive for an SUV. The V6 is plenty powerful, quiet and buttery smooth. I cant say enough good things about this vehicle.

  • Pretty good SUV - 2003 Nissan Xterra

Ive owned this Xterra about 8 months and have driven 17K miles to date. It constantly gets 16MPG no matter what type of driving I do. I recently drove to Florida (1,260 miles each way) It still got 16MPG. Of course I was going about 75MPH. Other than that it seems solid.

  • Me? Rugged? - 2003 Nissan Xterra

I am not the rugged type, but this car has let me feel like Im a sporty, outdoorsy type. In actuality, I dont even own a bike, but I feel like everytime someone sees me driving it theyre thinking, "Wow, I bet that girl knows how to have fun!"
