Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

the xterra is everything an suv should and shouldnt be. it has the rugged exterior and an essential, spacious interior. believe it or not, but the xterra is actually one of the more economical and safer rides compared to other gas-guzzling suvs. some of these other suvs are a royal rip-off price- wise when compared to the xterra, one that is priced for anyone with two kids and a dog, regardless of their ses. this is the type of vehicle that you can drive like in urban areas the same way you drive off-road. afterall, what were suvs designed for in the first place? the xterra easily comes to mind above the rest...

i really like the xterra. wanted to get one for several years, but always drug my feet. i have alot of fun driving it. the only thing i do not like about the xterra is that it is geared really low. other than that, i would not trade it in for anything else!!!

  • Missed the little things - 2004 Nissan Xterra

have had to go back to the dealership a lot for little things like cold air around the handles and window trim falling off. the window motors are too light weight and are troublesome. Fuel economy is nothing like I expected to get, average 15.3 and thats with a lot of highway miles, you would think that with that kind of mileage it would have some power but the engine is starving for power. The A/C runs even when the system is not activated, they claim its due to the defrost system but I think they screwed up in the design and its Nissans way of getting out of a repair charge.

  • Great truck but not without reliability glitches - 2001 Nissan Xterra

I bought it used on a private sale from craigslist replacing my 1985 Toyota 4runner that I ran up 550,000km (340,000miles to you guys south of the 49th). However last year (2011) the in-tank electric turbine fuel pump unexpectedly quit (at 220,000km odometer reading) leaving me stranded on the side of highway. It wound up costing me well over $1000 in towing charges, parts and labor plus an overnight motel stay and a one day travel delay. Now that I know how to replace it I carry a spare fuel pump and screwdriver along with the spare tire....

  • Love My Hot Lava - 2002 Nissan Xterra
    By -

When looking for a 4x4 I saw this Xterra siting on the used car lot and fell in love. I have liked the body style since they first came out. Even thought i love the yellow and silver I opt for what they call Molten Lava. I nicknamed her Hot Lava. It was the only car I test drove or even looked at and bought her that night. I traded in a 1999 Cavalier Z24 which I loved but Hot Lava is slowly winning over my heart. I like all the room but hate the lack of power when passing or taking off from a stand still the one thing I do miss from my Z24. Overall Im happy with my choice and hope to have many good years together.

  • a real suv - 2005 Nissan Xterra

This is a real suv. No leather option, no four wheel indepenent suspension, plenty of cleats for anchoring cargo, plenty of horse power and torque with a fun 6 speed tranny and plenty of towing capacity

  • Very pleased, minor complaints - 2008 Nissan Xterra
    By -

I love my Xterra, it was very affordable and meets all of my needs. The only complaints are the seats are kinda cheap. Material for seats get worn fast. The other complaint is that the X model did not come with crossbars for the roof rack! Why have a roof rack without cross members and they cost almost $250. All and all I love my Xterra and the six speed makes it very fun to drive.

  • Safety first - 2004 Nissan Xterra

I was in a horrible head on collision in Dec. Everyone told me the only reason I was alive was because of my car! In my opinion, the XTERRA is the safest car on the road.

  • Nissan is a name you can trust! - 2003 Nissan Xterra
    By -

This is Xterra #2 for me. My first was a 2000 XE V6 which I thoroughly enjoyed. I had it around two years and put around 30,000 miles on it before I needed money for getting married and buying a house. Now a couple of years later Ive replaced my lost treasure with a 2003 SE 4x4 V6. Theres really no difference inside except for the gauges and radio package. The Fosgate sound system is awesome and the sub really hits nicely. The transfer case shifts nice and smooth with easy transistions between 2 and 4 wheel. This X has really lived up to the expectations and quality that I know to expect from Nissan.
