This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, 17-inch alloy wheels are now standard on non-supercharged SE models, and 16-inch, four-spoke alloys are standard on the XE-V6.

Pros:
  • Rugged looks and the off-road capability to match, lots of room inside, solid construction.
Cons:
  • Sloppy on-road ride and steering, four-cylinder and standard V6 lack power, spartan cabin design.

  • A kids dream. - 2004 Nissan Xterra

When i was just a kid, i thougth that the only brands capable of doing REAL off road vehicles where land rover, jeep, and nissan. My favorite was without a doubt the patrol. all of them, with round head ligths. Since then ive been waiting to have a nissan off roader. when i saw the 2002, 3 and 4 Xterra, i went to a nissan dealer and bougth an Xterra. This is a great vehicle, on road is acceptable, but its a great off roader, no problems so far. the interior is strong, and i like that. If you want a vehicle capable and practicaL, GO FOR THE X!

This is my first SUV and I love just about everything about it. It snowed last winter and she drove like a dream. The controls are all within reach. The ride is pretty comfortable considering its built on a truck frame.

This is a great vehicle, however second row spacing is limited (crowded)due to the stadium seating. Drives well in different terrains, however feels very light when windy and moves easily. Extremely easy to have an accident under these conditions. Overall satisfied.

If a fun, off-road worthy vehicle is what you are after, then The X-terra is for you. It is built for a purpose and fills it! Handles capably on the road, but was designed to be abused. Somewhat simplistic in its design (interior specifically), but most places you take this the scenery is better outside anyway. Get an X-terra and USE it!!!

  • A Bit Disappointed in Nissan - 2004 Nissan Xterra

Reliability has been great and it has definitely hauled a lot of items for me. Very easy to steer and turns on a dime. However, Im very disappointed in Nissan craftmanship. Front grille immediately faded within 6 months. I was told by dealer that this was part of the "rugged" look and they wouldnt replace it. Seats are very hard and uncomfortable for travel. Windows have poor insulation - wind is howling. No mirrors even on the visors! Back seat doors are made for people smaller than a size ten (and younger than 50) to squeeze through to get into the backseat. But I guess you pay for what you get.

I bought a 2004 Xterra brand new and it was a great car until a patch of black ice and a telephone pole last week. Very safe vehicle, as I was uninjured from the crash. I had racked up close to 170,000 miles without any major issues, just your usual suspects (brakes, tires, etc.). Engine and transmission were still running great. The only thing I had noticed was the heater/AC blower motor would only work on high (seems to be a recurring Nissan problem, Ive had it happen to 2 other Nissans). Other than that, a great car! Im seriously considering buying another one to replace it.

Back in 2002 I had an Se model with a 5 speed manual tran.,and I loved it. Now i go to buy a new one this year and they dont have a manual tran in the Se. Now I but the tran i wanted, but not the model I wanted. I got the Xe instead of the Se.Why did Nissan do this?

  • Xterra the best car ever - 2004 Nissan Xterra

I bought my xterra new and use it for work and do a lot of driving . I have 210,990 miles and do all the required maint. Oil every 4-5000 miles. Trans fluid every 50k. Tune-up was done at 150k w/timing belt. Didnt need water pump but changed it anyway. Shocks (factory stock at 40k not that good ) but since then) kybs no prob! The only prob is break dust on front rims, hard to keep clean. Breaks every 30k easy to do my self. Engine strong overall very strong .

I like most everthing. Rides good for what it is. low end insides. 300 h p gas with 180 hp. Does not even get 18 on the freeway. Like all cars you only get the low number. Over all for the price its all good.
