Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

  • A Real Race Horse! - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I bought the "S" model with all the options of the "SE" except the fog lights and expanded sound/CD option. This SUV runs like a race horse! When you push on the gas, you can really feel the 265HP go! Ride is like a truck but not real bumpy... takes the dips excellent and bumps good. Rides like a car on the highway. 4WD is outstanding! In 3 weeks I have driven over 2000 miles with about 100+ in 4WD. It will go just about anywhere off road or in mud. (I have not driven in snow, yet.) Tracksion is great, especially in 4WD LO. I feel very secure going to my favorite camping/fishing location. Really fun to drive!

  • Great car for my boys and dogs! - 2006 Nissan Xterra

I have always had an SUV but had to get a sedan when I had children. The car life was killing me. I have two active boys (camping, hiking, soccer, football, fishing) and two dogs that were tearing my car up. So far we have gone camping in this and to one long distance tournament. It has been a great vehicle so far. Nobody in my family has had one complaint yet. Love the extra compartment on rack for dirty cleats and stinky fish. The back cargo area cleans up great too. There is plenty of leg room in back for adults and growing children. I got the bumper to bumper 100,000 mile warranty to cover the vehicle through note and then some. Co-workers is 250,000 miles with no problems.

  • Upgrade from the 2001 Xterra - 2006 Nissan Xterra

Able to get the new 2006 Nissan Xterra this past week, got the Red Brawan color and could not be happier. I love the new X, love the new Horse Power, love the Xterra period. It is one of the most unique looking vehicles on the road, and also can compete with almost anything out there. Thanks to Nissan for making me want to buy another one....it is truly worth it.

  • Engine Issues - 2000 Nissan Xterra
    By -

I am glad that Nissan no longer uses this V6 engine when they introduced the 2005 model. My engine problems began at 65 to 70k miles. I had to replace the Knock sensor that is located deep inside the block. The dealer wanted $1200 to replace; I used a non-dealer where the cost to repair in the book understates the labor hours. The timing belt wont last for 105K miles; they now recommend every 60k that costs another several hundred dollars. Thank god my exhaust manifolds have held up even though my dealer said they needed to be replaced for $1200 (other mechanics said they were ok.) Nissan uses a "plastic" bolt on the ac compressor sprocket. Mine eventually "popped" off.

  • OUTSTANDING BUY! - 2003 Nissan Xterra

I have only had the XTerra for two weeks and it is absolutely the best vehicle purchase I have made in 25 years!!!! Fun, durable, reliable, and easy to drive. It has the necessities of a truck/SUV but the handling capability of a car. It looks great all cleaned and waxed for a luncheon with clients; or all muddy and rough for a weekend camping or hiking. GREAT VEHICLE!!!! 110% SATISFACTION!

  • Just Awesome!! - 2006 Nissan Xterra

I think Nissan couldnt have redone this any better from the bigger engine, to the plastic bumper to the step in the rear this suv has it all!! It rides very well and with the SE package you can tear up the roads without ever worring about having problems!

  • Truly a "Shift" in the Nissan sense - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

Traded in an 02 Maxima SE for my Xterra (different needs) and I love my new rig. Nissan really has their stuff together and I am glad to benefit from their change in styling, performance, and quality. I made the move from Honda to Nissan in 98 and havent regretted it at all. I thoroughly enjoy my new Xterra from its powerful engine to the great stereo. The ride is firm but controlled, and the stereo is fantastic (much better than the Bose in my Maxima). Combine that with great reliablity and a strong dealership--this Xterra makes the ninth Nissan purchased by our family or neighbors from Peacock Nissan in the last 4 years--and you cant go wrong. My dogs love it too.
