This Year's Model Updates:

The Xterra has been fully redesigned for 2005 with a new platform, a more powerful V6 and a more spacious interior.

Pros:
  • One of the most powerful V6s in the class, above average off-road capability, solid passenger room, innovative cargo features.
Cons:
  • Still not what we would call refined on the street, a few instances of low-grade interior materials.

  • Very Satisfied - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I just purchased a 2005 Off Road 4wd model after much research. I love it. This may be one of the most underrated vehicles manufactured this year. The Xterra is solidly built and roughly 15-20k less than the Landrover LR3 or Discovery. While the latter may have the most advanced 4 wheel drive system of any SUV on the road (and posher interior), I bought the Nissan because I value reliability over anything else. I work in the back country and I cant break down. The Off Road edition has a stiffer feel and ride than the 4wd SE models I test drove and if anyone intends to use this vehicle for off-roading I would strongly suggest that you opt for the OR model over an S or SE.

I love my xterra...it has a great ride, lots of fun to drive and the 4wd is great in the snow! It doesnt have the greatest pickup but overall highly recommend!

  • 05 Xterra S 6-speed - 2005 Nissan Xterra

Bought it used with 900 miles, have put 5000 miles on it, with no problems. Fun to drive, very roomy, handles and performs well. 6-speed Manual gets up to 25 mpg on the highway. Glad that I bought this vehicle.

  • Awesome - 2005 Nissan Xterra

Very well built and well thought out veh. All the little things like tie downs, roof storage are, dual glove box, door cup holder, are great to have. This veh would not be a very good for people who would have to use the back seat b/c of fender/wheel clearance area. Other than that this veh is awesome. Strong motor, good steering, nice stereo (even the standard one), in trunk floor storage, etc. All of the seats will fold flat including the front passenger seat. There are steps on the rear bumper which allow access to the roof of the vehicle if needed. Engine feels strong and I havent had a single problem with this veh since the day i bought it new

  • Excellent but for a few mech. issues - 2005 Nissan Xterra

This a good vehicle. If would be very good except for a few items. 1.) Sometimes takes several miles to switch out of 4 wheel drive (up to 20). 2.) The fuel level transmitter went faulty at about 53K (1.5 yrs). 3.) The front wheel bearing sounds like it is going bad. It was the best vehicle for the money when I bought it and if you want a lot of power and dont mind the poorer gas mileage, this car is for you. The seats on the base model are not that comfortable. I would highly recommend this vehicle for college students going off to college.

  • Fun to drive with a few tradeoffs - 2005 Nissan Xterra

The drivetrain of the Xterra is great. The engine/ transmission work together well and the 4x4 works great. Rear seat entry is tough but roomy once you get in (Im 62"). The plastic interior is easily scratched. Weve had problems with a squeak in the hood latch and a noise from the fuel pump. Both of these noises were loud and took a while for the dealer to fix. Overall the Xterra has been a decent vehicle with a few minor problems.

  • Just Plain Awesome - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I had been considering the Xterra for about 2 years. I previously had a GMC Jimmy. I would rather have one Xterra than 10 GM models. The design of the Xterra is overall more appealing and more user friendly. Nissan was definetely thinking when they designed this SUV.

  • Not a "car" SUV - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

If you are looking for a "car" SUV, look at a CRV or RAV4. If you want a real truck that can traverse real off road terrain, tow substantial loads, and has enough power to blow off v-8 powered trucks, and for way less than $30K...no need to look further!

For the price, its quite a roomy SUV with quite a powerful engine. THE CONS: The transmission is quite noisy and feels like driving a truck. Shifting is not as smooth as it would be in a car. Noise carries inside especially when shifting gears. Lacks the smoothe ride of a car or a luxury SUV. The dash is very dreary. Front passenger seat not very comfortable. The vinly lined cargo are tends to get scratched. Bad at handling corners. THE PROS: Fun to drive, especially on straight roads. Good performance(0-60 in under 8 sec). Pricing. Cloth seats have a unique fabric that give it a rugged look. Descent fuel efficieny when you take into account that its a SUV and has a 265hp engine.
