Model Overview:

The Nissan Xterra is a traditional midsize SUV with seating for five and serious off-road capability. Thanks to stout body-on-frame construction shared with Nissan's Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a beast on the trail and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse. The downside is that this Nissan lacks the on-road polish of car-based crossover SUVs you might buy instead.

The Xterra debuted for the 2000 model year. Later Nissan Xterras are similar in appearance and personality to the early models but have a slightly longer wheelbase, a roomier interior, more power under the hood and a few extra features. If you want a reasonably priced off-roader and find the Jeep Wrangler too crude for everyday driving, the Xterra is worth a look.

  • Nissan gets it right.... - 2006 Nissan Xterra

I just recently picked up the 2006 X- Terra and boy am I pleased. It has a very smooth ride at high speeds, corners like a car, and has a lot of cabin and storage room. It has a five- star side impact rating, and was voted 2006 Motor Trend SUV of the YEAR!! My only knock is the gas mileage, which isnt bad, but at 21/16 it could be a little better. But in its exchange you are getting a hell of a vehicle with some styling, not like your uninspired Ford Escape or Trailblazer out there. All in all, a very dependable vehicle that you can be proud to own.

  • Top Of The World - 2003 Nissan Xterra

I traded my 04 FX35 with 59k on a 5 speed,03 Xterra with 103k miles in March 2010. Did a major service with timing belt and the works then put a set of beautifully aggressive and very quiet Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac 265/75/16 tires on it, drove it from Los Angeles to Moab,Utah for the Easter Jeep Safari. I completed the "Top Of The World" and "Fins and things" trails which are rated difficult with this awesome show room stock vehicle. This vehicle is absolutely impressive and I do not impress easily having owned a few "built" off road rides. Now back in L.A. and drive it daily about 50 miles in total comfort. I love my Xterra more than anything I have owned. Nissan has created a gem.

  • Disappointment - 2004 Nissan Xterra

I was pretty disappointed with my Xterra. If all you need is something to look cute driving around town, youll enjoy the Xterras rugged looks and relatively easy handling. Try and get it dirty however and youll be disappointed. It slips easily in ice and snow (turning, even with 4WD is precarious), the mud factor wasnt great either, even in 4WD low. The interior is hard to keep clean, and the outside dents easily. Passing people on the highway is nearly impossible, even with the bigger engine option. And of course, fuel economy is horrendous with gas as much as it is now.

  • What a terrific 4x4 ! - 2005 Nissan Xterra

Ive driven Mitsubishi Monteros since 1984 in Saudi, China Indonesia, Greece and the U.S.; in dificult off-road terrains in all weather conditions. This is our second Xterra(previous one was a 2003 SE),and I simply love it. More power, better on and off-road manners and abilty/prowess. One complaint:make the outside temperature gauge standard, add a compass (much needed!) and make the arm-rest on top of the center console slideable(back and forth, on a hidden track just like the Mitsu Monteros; post-2003 models) Then,do nothing! Youll have the perfect 4x4 SUV! fyi: Im taking my 05 Xterra to Greece this April to October for some serious offroading; just like last year and the year before with the Montero!

  • Loved it. now I hate it. - 2005 Nissan Xterra

Everything I needed in a SUV and the stereo was simply the best. I had 3 trouble free years with the exception of the trailer hitch recall. Then the first of what was to become an endless string of repairs began with the $500 gas sender. Another known defective Nissan part that we the consumer had to eat. 3 months later, new brakes and front U joints. New battery and tires at 40,000 miles. Had the recall for the airbag sensor fixed in early 2010 along with a radiator flush. This September fell victim to the radiator failure/ tranny fry. Im having it fixed independently as Nissan refused any assistance. I am also suing Nissan for my costs. Been a Nissan man for a while. No more.

  • gas mileage is terrible - 2001 Nissan Xterra

When i first bought this vehicle i didnt do alot of traveling but a few months ago i got promoted and now i travel alot for sales and this is not a traveling suv. The gas mileage is just terrible. Its costing me over $300 dollars a month just to drive it. Thats why im going to trade it in for a subaru. For the gas mileage gains and the fact that the area i live in i still need all wheel drive or 4wd

  • Shame on Nissan!! - 2005 Nissan Xterra

Purchased at 64000 miles, drove it, loved it, no problems at all other than the tire pressure light after so many miles of consistent driving. Then, at 121,000 miles, boom... transmission failure. Upon further research, it is a NISSAN DEFECT in the radiator that Nissan refuses to address more than a little warranty increase, and even THAT took a lawsuit. I spent $3000+ over a period of 8 months to fix it and it still wasnt fixed. I had to purchase another vehicle to drive while it was down. I ran out of money, so I was forced to trade the XTerra with $3500 of negative equity, totaling near $7000 that I lost on this vehicle, due to Nissan and its ways. NEVER. AGAIN.
