This Year's Model Updates:

The Xterra has been fully redesigned for 2005 with a new platform, a more powerful V6 and a more spacious interior.

Pros:
  • One of the most powerful V6s in the class, above average off-road capability, solid passenger room, innovative cargo features.
Cons:
  • Still not what we would call refined on the street, a few instances of low-grade interior materials.

  • Nice redesign - 2005 Nissan Xterra

If youre in the market for this size SUV, and have only driven the past version, give this one a shot. The upgraded engine and torque really make this car standout. Its still a truck, make no mistake, but it doesnt feel much like a truck on the road. Outstanding turn radius as well.

  • Great Truck for a Buck - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I purchased my Nissan X-Terra SE in 2005 brand new. I wanted BASIC reliable transportation and 4wheel drive. Live in the northeast. I have just under 40000 miles Ive replaced the brakes all around once along with routine maintenance. The truck always starts always gets me where I have to go. Wish the gas mileage was better but I knew what I was getting when I made the purchase. The engine has loads of power and handle like a stable truck. This is not meant to be a fancy ride. Its a basic good honest truck, thats it.

You have to love the power and handling of this vehicle! I wish it would get maybe a little better gas mileage, but then the power would have to be lowered...guess paying a little more on your gas bill makes it worth it in the long run...shes a bit on the stiffer side, but thats a good thing in my book Mate!

  • 2005 Xterra - Still runs great! - 2005 Nissan Xterra

My 2005 "S" Xterra 4WD with all the options of the "SE" still runs great and is fun to drive! I dont have fog lights and never found a pre-fab kit to install or I would have installed them. The only failures was the original battery - as usual on all new cars and the rear shocks had to be replaced at about 55,000 miles. The Xterra tows my 19 Bayliner just fine. Plenty of power every where I go. Off road is a blast! Now I have over 80,000 miles on the SUV and havent had a brake job! (Had to have one every 25,000 miles on my GM cars.) I hope to buy a new Xterra in a couple of years. Nissan makes a great car/SUV. NOTE: THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC!

  • Recall and all the known issues - 2005 Nissan Xterra
    By -

Hardy J…in PA. Bought a 2005 Nissan X terra from Sheehy in Glen Burnie, MD. I did research on the Xterra’s before I bought the SUV and people were OK with the model and the gas mpg were crappy. I was happy with mine for months then…..the fuel sending unit went out, had the sensor recalls done, I paid for the front hubs out of my own pocket and now…..the radiator leaked into the transmission just like Nissan expected. 100’s of people texted, wrote, emailed, complained about all the known issues with the xterra’s. All the issues were like text book. Some owner issues were paid under warranty, some paid out of pocket, some had financial help from Nissan Corporate and some bit the bullet and were out of thousands like me. I can not afford to pay for the radiator replacement, new tranny and replace the catalytic converts. Contacted Nissan corp., they said I was way passed the warranty for the tranny and radiator repair. Nissan knew the Xterra had issues with the 2005 to 2007, but they would not recall all the issues. I’ve seen many sites with some pissed off owners because they are left with a lemon. I never knew I would get screwed by a car manufacture. Some owners were in the middle of the road with their families when the tranny died. Its worst than the issues with the Camrys killing people. The Xterra is a nice SUV minus the 2005 to 2007.

  • Loved it, but... - 2005 Nissan Xterra

We just traded it because we couldnt afford 16/mpg average. The only significant problem we had was around 88k, our A/C stopped working--crucial in Phoenix. We found out it was the radiator which was plugged at 30%. We were told since its such a small radiator, this caused the A/C to stop working. Thankfully, we had an extended warranty because the bill for this was costly because there was a lot of figuring out what to do before they figured it out. Between the gas, the cost of tires ($200/each) and oil changes ($50 each) we traded our car. It was a sad day, but we will be happier at the gas station, thats for sure.

Ive never had more fun owning a car/truck. She runs like a sewing machine. Handles on the mountain passes here in CO perfectly. Off road very reliable. The girls wish it had a lighted passenger mirror. I bought em a make-up mirror and a flashlight.

i love this vehicle. my only problem is the looseness of the steering wheel. it did take some time getting used to, but it proved out well in our 600 mile drive to FLA for spring break.

  • 5 Year Review - 2005 Nissan Xterra

I bought mine brand new in 2005. I now have 116,000 miles on the vehicle. I do a lot of driving. This is a fun car to drive on road and off road. I have taken it on many off road trails and it handles very well off road and will climb steep hills, drive through muddy roads, deep snow. Quality wise its a good vehicle, Ive had problems with the CD player, Im on my 3rd one right now. Ive had some squeaky belts replaced a few, this can be annoying with the car squeaking. The most expensive repair Ive had is when the computer went out on the car and the car was out of warranty.
