This Year's Model Updates:

Still smarting from that 1996 "redesign" that had many longtime Sable fans running to the competition, Mercury performed some minor cosmetic surgery in '98 to help soften the Sable's front end. This year's changes are limited to new wheel designs, a revised gauge cluster and interior console, as well as suspension alterations designed to improve overall ride quality. The particulate filtration system has been deleted from this year's models.

Pros:
  • With Mercury dropping its prices on all 1999 models, the Sable is an even better buy than last year.
Cons:
  • It offers no substantial advantage over the similarly-priced and not-as-weird-looking Accord or Camry.

  • A Car You Cant Live Without - 1999 Mercury Sable

I travel 45k miles per year, and trade every 18 months or so. I bought the Sable because the price was better than the Focus wagon I wanted...then discovered tons of comfort, awesome ride, amazing Mach audio system, space galore, a strong feeling of safety, and good looks. Im looking forward to trading this for the 03 model!

Its been a decent car for the most part. Weve put over 80,000 miles on it in 4 yrs. The problems have been the cooling system, the brake rotors, and the heater core went out a year ago. And why Ford put independent rear suspension on it, ill never know, just extra struts to be replaced! The wind noise is right on the edge of being tolerable. However, I wouldnt be afraid to go cross country in her right now! A person could do worse.

This is my sixth Sable/Taurus and my first wagon. I am quite satisfied. You get a lot of nice features, a lot of comfort, and a lot of room, all for not much money. I have had no problems with this Sable, and am now giving it to my daughter as her first commuter vehicle.

At 64K miles the transmission went out. It was a bad bearing on the pumpshaft which took out the torque converter. That cost $850. At 87K miles a friend wanted to buy it. I told him to have a mechanic check it out and drive it for a few days. Turns out the head gasket was blown. I had no idea. It never got hot and since you cant actually see in the radiator, and the little bottle stayed full, nobody caught it. We are now pround Camry owners.

First car I bought new when I was just out of college. very impressed that I could afford leather and a moon roof for $23,000- tax, title, license all included--- and 0.9% financing to boot. test drove a pontiac grand prix and couldnt see out of it Sable is a good buy for what you get. Good on tires- first set went to 65,000 miles... got the same mileage out of original brakes as well. Would recommend car to anyone looking for a good used car (provided the original owener took good care of it, of course).

  • Good workhorse car - 1999 Mercury Sable

This is my fourth Sable/Taurus wagon, and Im shopping for a new one now. The earlier models were plagued with transmission problems, but at 98k, the transmission on the 99 is doing just fine. I only do required maintenance. The only problem I had over the last four years was an intermittant electrical problem; turned out to be a loose battery post. Anyway, nothing but praise for this old workhorse. I load the back with forklifts, I carry my bikes on top, its my restaurant, and dormitory.

Car has worked flawlessly, nothing but regular maintenance to date. Replaced original set of tires at 58k miles. Automatic transmission shifting good be smoother from low to high gear when power accelerating. Car is ugly, but very comfortable to drive.

  • poor mechanical reliability but some fun - 1999 Mercury Sable

Replaced/ returned front braker rotors three times in first 75000 miles. Replaced front steering rack and power steering pump at 65000 miles. Car gets poor fuel economy intown 12 - 18 MPG & hwy 28 MPG. Will hang on to this car untill a catastropic failure occurs.
