Overview & Reviews
Still smarting from that 1996 "redesign" that had many longtime Sable fans running to the competition, Mercury performed some minor cosmetic surgery in '98 to help soften the Sable's front end. This year's changes are limited to new wheel designs, a revised gauge cluster and interior console, as well as suspension alterations designed to improve overall ride quality. The particulate filtration system has been deleted from this year's models.
- With Mercury dropping its prices on all 1999 models, the Sable is an even better buy than last year.
- It offers no substantial advantage over the similarly-priced and not-as-weird-looking Accord or Camry.

Love this car, but am concerned ........ - 1999 Mercury Sable
By JerseyJeff - June 28 - 4:23 pmBought this car with 12K miles on it 10 years ago. Now has 120K miles on it. Overall, I am satisfied however my concerns are, the cooling system needs tobe flushed every 18 months to clean out the heater core, the windshield wipers come on buy themselves, the cruise control works sporadically, and the ABS light comes on when it is very cold out. The really big issue was when the brake lines rusted out last summer while my 19 year old son was driving. The brakes failed and he ran into the car in front of him. I thought the car had been well maintained, but it seems no one had checked the brake lines. I understand rusting brake lines are a common Ford issue.

Great Car at Great Price - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Love my Sable - April 25 - 10:00 amI bought my 1999 Sable in 2000. I have only had to do routine maitenance on it and have had NO problems with the car whatsoever. It is a smooth and comfortable ride and the most dependable car I have ever owned. The only negative thing I can even say about it is that it is a bit of a gas hog. Other than that, I love my Sable:)

Another Ford Transmission Problem - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Steve--Midlothian VA - April 25 - 1:10 amI am the 2nd owner of my 99 Sable (owned it for almost 4 years). It has only 70k miles on it, but it already needs major transmission work. It slips, or neutrals out momentarily, when starting from a stop. Ford, this is a safety issue, not just a value issue! No car should require a transmission rebuild at 70k. Additionally, the ABS light comes on intermittently, the brake pedal groans a bit, then sinks slightly to the floor. The dealer says his diagnostic computer cant communicate with my cars computer, so he doesnt know whats wrong or how to fix it. Makes me feel like I own a FIAT ("Fix It Again, Tony"). Now I understand why so many people switch to Hondas and Toyotas.

Good car - 1999 Mercury Sable
By celticdoc - February 4 - 7:33 pmThe only problem that I had with this car is that the brakes wore out every 25,000 miles. The breaks also had a loud squeaking after several thousand miles. Other than that, the car ran great.
