Overview & Reviews
Still smarting from that 1996 "redesign" that had many longtime Sable fans running to the competition, Mercury performed some minor cosmetic surgery in '98 to help soften the Sable's front end. This year's changes are limited to new wheel designs, a revised gauge cluster and interior console, as well as suspension alterations designed to improve overall ride quality. The particulate filtration system has been deleted from this year's models.
- With Mercury dropping its prices on all 1999 models, the Sable is an even better buy than last year.
- It offers no substantial advantage over the similarly-priced and not-as-weird-looking Accord or Camry.

A good, solid car - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Mickie G - July 19 - 12:46 pmThere is one major drawback, gas gas gas consumption. Otherwise this is a solid investment if you purchase this car with low mileage and car fax proves that it was not driven into the ground. If the car was well maintained and has clean background, this is indeed a great car to have.

Not a bad choice dependable comfortable - 1999 Mercury Sable
By G Man - May 4 - 7:53 pmI got this low mileage car with fears of why it was available, but I must say it has really performed. The interior is nice, has lots of extras and the ride itself is smooth. This is a very dependable car and I would recommend it to others. The key is getting one with low mileage and was well maintained. The trunk space is huge, and stereo system very good. The engine and transmission are solid with the exception of the hidden radiator and no way of checking it. Suspension is fine. Not the best on gas however. There are really no complaints here. A good investment.

sable review - 1999 Mercury Sable
By stratamite - April 25 - 10:00 amIt was fine, it could be more roomier. There are no cup holders in the back, not good you have kids. Otherwise I liked it. The car did very well on long trips. It has great power for passing on the highway.

99 Mercury Sable LS Special Edition - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Rich - September 10 - 9:36 pmEnd of year model had factory dual exhaust & dual overhead cam V6 and 16inch chrome aluminum wheels and stiff suspension. After 62,400 miles it has been nearly trouble free, Replaced the master cylinder at 49,000 & idle control valve at 46,000. Runs very good easy to start and handles good. Original brakes lasted for 49,000 miles. Nice road car and looks great. Tune up is not needed until 100,000 miles. I really like the car.

always something going wrong - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Mike - June 16 - 9:16 pmIt had 118,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2004. In one year I have replaced the battery, steering pump, back brake calipers, rotors, tires, spark plug wires, O2 sensor, coolant over flow bottle, rack and pinion $900, and the engine light is on now and the car surges because another sensor has gone bad and its like having a car payment every month. My Windstar was worse. My family has owned Ford cars for more than 50 years and they all had electrical problems. Once the engine light comes on it never shuts off. Ive had it!!!

Solid, if low miles - 1999 Mercury Sable
By A Good Solid Car - May 23 - 3:50 amThe car is a solid investment, runs well and is easy to handle. The engine is very reliable but gas mileage is not the best by far. Excellent vehicle over all. Would recommend a low mileage well taken care of car.

Great All Around Car! - 1999 Mercury Sable
By Mike - May 7 - 11:33 amThe Sable (Merc version of the Ford Taurus) has been found to be a safe and reliable full-size, mid-price, passenger car. I bought it as a "first car" for my 17 year old daughter during her senior year in high school. It has ample style and power; plus plenty of room to move a kid into a dorm room 200 miles away. I fully expect it to satisfy her vehicle needs throughout her college years.

Problems, Problems - 1999 Mercury Sable
By rlb71956 - April 8 - 10:00 amReliability has been marginal at best. Vehicle currently has only 81,000 miles, and have already had to have a complete new transmission ($3,000), replaced the alternator, replaced the power steering pump, replaced the front wheel bearings, replaced the rear brakes and rotors, replaced the front brakes and rotors. Interior quality also not so good, with holes in the carpet on the drivers side. Trade-in value seems to be going down a LOT faster than my loan balance.
