Overview & Reviews
A mild facelift and fewer options are the only change to Mercury's midsize sedan.
- A fine American car with nice ride characteristics and a great interior.
- This is an ugly car. New competition from Honda, Toyota, and Oldsmobile make it a tough sell.

Going Strong - 1998 Mercury Sable
By trigubo - December 17 - 10:00 amI had my doubts when I bought my Sable. But with the 200 HP 24 V Duratec, this car is a monster when I need it to be. Aside from some repairs at about 30K miles that the warranty covered anyway, the Sable has held up pretty well and its still going strong.

Best used vehicle I have owned. - 1998 Mercury Sable
By vtray - October 28 - 3:07 amI am 73 and have owned a lot of vehicles, both new and used. I bought this car in Florida with 69K miles on it. We have a condo in Fl and live in VT. I drove it (packed to the ceiling) to Vermont (1635 Miles) and never had a problem. When I bought it, I had a wheel alignment and two new tires. Other than that, nothing was done. Although it is a GS model it has a lot of add ons such as the V6 Durotec engine with dual exhaust, leather all around, power seats, security system, chrome wheels etc. The Durotec is fantastic. It is quick (200HP) and yet delivers 28 MPG on the highway. Have had the car for about 9 months and no problems yet.

it will do - 1998 Mercury Sable
By chef chris - August 11 - 2:00 ambought 98 gs, with 50000 on it, for a steal of a deal. have put 5 thousand on it in a half year, and have not been dissapointed. I had to settle for this as opposed to an sho, but its doin ok. After some practice, the trany is fine, but it must been driven smothly, no sudden acceleration, or it freaks out, but the duratec is a great engine. I look foward to seeing the duratec in a more stylish vehicle such as the new mazda 6, which is a duratec block with mazda designed heads that incoperate valve timing like hondas v-tec. all in all i love it.

Nice car at lower mileage - 1998 Mercury Sable
By proud2be - May 22 - 2:00 amCar was great when we first bought it, but then little things started going wrong. Wacky things. Replaced transmission mount twice, replaced numerous sensors. Anti-theft light continually blinks, now even when driving. I really like that one key opens everything. Has never left us stranded, but little things keep going bad. I just dont feel that its dependable anymore. Priced too high for what you get and doesnt hold value.

By ya kiddd - January 17 - 10:00 amThis car is a sleeper, with 200 hp and dual exhaust, its pretty fun to drive and also suprised me when i stepped on the gas. It has great acceleration with lots of toys & options : outside temp, sunroof, auto climate, spacious interiorm and a great sound system. I had my Sable for about 4 years with no major mechanical problems....until it got totaled

205,000 Miles and still going. - 1998 Mercury Sable
By GAT - June 5 - 11:06 pmPurchased as a used rental car in 99. I need it to go another 80,000 miles til i retire and i think it will. Only recurring problems are brake calipers. Replaced both rear. Comfortable, dependable and good passing power.
