This Year's Model Updates:

A mild facelift and fewer options are the only change to Mercury's midsize sedan.

Pros:
  • A fine American car with nice ride characteristics and a great interior.
Cons:
  • This is an ugly car. New competition from Honda, Toyota, and Oldsmobile make it a tough sell.

  • Excellent Car - 1998 Mercury Sable

Just returned from a trip to West Virginia. The car with the 3.0 L engine performed excellently going up and down hills, with the car fully loaded (4 passengers and ski gear). Higher octane gas helps under these conditions. Performs like a new car with 84,000 miles- who says Detroit cant make good car?

  • Very reliable Sable - 1998 Mercury Sable

In 1995 I was attracted by the styling of the Sable and Taurus. I like the futuristic aerodynamics shape, it is still looking updated in 2005. Never boring interior. But I was surprise by the excellent reliability. There were not a single problem for 7 years. The Sable is very stable on the road with the firm suspensions, very little float, good for high speed and lane changes. Road holding is very good except on snow. Kind of like driving a train. Very little lean in turns. A lot of car and accessories for the low price. No charge leather, auto air condition, moon roof and air filtration system, heated rear mirrors, California emissions for ULEV,etc. Very roomy inside with a large truck.

  • This is my best friend - 1998 Mercury Sable

For an American made car, this car is great. Reliable, comfortable and for a V6 good on gas. I have never had a car with this much milage that I could say that about. I will be getting another Sable soon, only because of body damage done to this vehicle by an incompetent employee at an auto repair shop, and the companys insurance company decided it was a total loss and I will use the money from that to buy a newer model Sable. I think Mercury was crazy to discontinue this model for 2010 because it is a good solid car. Since Ive had it, nothing has gone on it that wasnt normal wear and tear.

  • Great family car - exceeds minivans - 1998 Mercury Sable

Previously owned by a family member, our large family thoroughly enjoys this car. With the 3rd seat, we get the "feel" of a minivan without the outrageous gas costs. Extremely comfortable and adaptable to drive...kids love it too.

  • Very good results - 1998 Mercury Sable

I have had no bad results and would recommend this car for any family. It has a lot of power and speed. The body has a few chips in the paint but no dents. It is white in color with beige cloth interior. Power driver seat. I just had the speed sensor replaced in the transmission. This is the only problem I have ever had with this car. It has 67000 miles on it.

  • Great Car - 1998 Mercury Sable

Bought the car used, 10+ years ago, with 25000 mls on it. Car now has over 276,000+ miles. It consistently gets 21 mpg. We recently took a 1000 mile trip and got 29 mpg. Getting old and having some problems but has been a GREAT car!!! Will probably replace with a used, NOT new style, model.

  • Sable Is Great - 1998 Mercury Sable

Ive owned this Sable since 98 and have had little problem with it. Its a nice looking car with a great amount of leg room in the front and rear. Quite ride, however, some wind noise.

  • A Great Car - 1998 Mercury Sable

Purchased in 2000 w/15,000 miles. Currently has 186,000 miles and still going strong. The parts are cheap and just about anyone can work on it. I do regular maintenance but outside of that I have replaced a coolant tube($100)and tie rods($200) at about 100,000 miles. My rear springs broke at 175,000 miles($600). The under carriage plate was loose at 150,00 and 180,000 miles, but my mechanic just tightened it and its fine. I really cant complain about her. She has had some work done to her but it beats buying a new car and it wasnt a big head ache. It has been a great reliable car. My problem now is that I dont trust to buy a new car and it will be as reliable.

  • Not too shabby - 1998 Mercury Sable
