Purchased my 98 Mystique GS two years ago for 1,800, with 86K on it. Since then, must have put 3K worth of repairs into it. The interior lights would fall down when driving. Headlights were awfully dim, replaced them and made a slight difference, but with the fogginess of the plastic what do you expect? Brakes were replaced and still were .. clunky when stopping. Next was the transmission! Oh boy, that went at 100K, got it replaced for the amount I paid for the car. About 2 months ago, it started an awful rattling noise when starting up the car, and when the A/C was on. Took it to my mechanic thinking it was the compressor, turns out it was the engine. Im sure theres more, but never AGAIN!

  • Nothing can compare!! - 1998 Mercury Mystique

I have the 2.5L 6 cyl fully loaded. This car is fun to drive, handles well and has always been reliable. I was going to sell it this year (it only has 21000M) but I cant find a new car I like better (including the new Jag., Volvo, Beetle, Cougar). It is well worth holding on to especially since they quit making them - what a shame!

4cyl GS. Had to write a positive review after reading many of the others. Bought the car in 2002 with 40000, and so far has far outlasted my expectations. After 187,000 miles, this car is running great. I have changed 2 water pumps, 1 timing belt, 1 thermostat, and 1 blinker switch. For the money, this is the best car I have ever owned. Changed oil every 5k and Tranny fluid every 30K. Follow the recommended service items and problems should be minimal. Granted, I dont get any double-takes from the ladies here, but for everyday transportation, it has been great.

  • Please Dont Buy - 1998 Mercury Mystique

I bought this car new not knowing that Ford likes to make inferior brake rotors that tend to warp quickly. I had many problems with the car as soon as the warranty ran out. How convenient. I had to replace the break twice in 65K miles due to warped rotors (which cant be turned). The wheel cylinder sprung a leak the power steering pump leaked dry, plus all the recalls. Amazingly, I always had great service from all of the dealerships that I had to visit. The V6 is a must, but nowadays smaller engines do just as well and dont suck down the gas. Leather is nice if you dont live in Vegas. Its probably a good thing that ford discontinued the mystique.

I think that my car is great. I mean it looks cute, drives great, and it is very roomy for all my friends.

  • Truly european... - 1998 Mercury Mystique

What i mean is like a lot of european cars like Alfa or WV, When it works its awesome. V6 acceleration, handling, ABS-less 4 disc braking, everything is there exept reliability. I didnt had problem with the man. transmission, power steering and radiator. Everything else broke; I even lost a wheel!(broken studs.) Biggest repetitive problems came from the front suspension and bearings. The instrument cluster PCB failed intermittently and the infamous plastic impeller of the water pump. Expensive ignition module broke at 60 miles, engine mounts, and one of the too many O2 sensors lit the "check engine" intermittently. Too bad for Ford, it could have been as good, even better than the Mazda 626

  • My Mystique Surprise - 1998 Mercury Mystique

My Mystique surprised me with its driveability. Handling is very good, Zetec 16V is responsive and fun to drive. Economy at 70 MPH measured on odometer is 38 MPG. I got this result 3 X. Five speed manual is a very good shifter. Shifter has alot of feel and is fun to drive. This car out handles my daughters 2008 Fusion. I dont know why Ford stopped production, except that it was to expensive and to small compared with the Taurus. I have driven the Taurus (2005). Mystique is far superior in most respects. This is another European Ford that was not appreciated by Americans. Too bad.

  • Powerful, unique, needs better quality.. - 2000 Mercury Mystique

i own the V6 LS model and it has ran great with minimal problems to this day. bought in 2001 and still own it today in 2009, very reliable, still attractive. love the LS features, preamium sound system, leather seats, motorized radio antenna. added a few things to it myself, like remote start and a better horn. few things have needed to be replaced but it seems that everything needs fixing at once now.... 1,000 dollar suspension estimate at belle tire. everything is luse in the front end. also had to repllace alternator at low miles. it has 151k miles now still good. needs new battery, it also makes this weird humming noise every now and then, doesnt seem to do anything major. left it alone

  • My OK Car - 1998 Mercury Mystique

I bought my 4cycl car from a private owner 4 years ago with 98,000 miles on it and now I currently have 161,000 miles on it. It has been a good little car, but I have had to put some work into it. The little things seem to be going wrong with it. When I got it I found the thermostat control sensor was messed up and it actually reads hotter than the engine is actually running. This last fall I had to replace the fuel regulator and now the car just stops running for no reason. The mechanic cant even figure it out. But I will keep on driving it because it is a good little car. Its fun to drive and cheap. Once its dead I will probably go get another one.
