  • Disappointed - 2000 Mercury Mystique
    By -

I bought this vehicle new.....took it for all the regular check-ups, oil change every 3,000 miles etc. At 80,000+ miles the engine blew. Yes, I had to replace the engine. Very disappointing because I took such good care of this car.

I purchased my mystique with 17000 mi. it nows has 42000 mi. i like the handling and the smoothness of the engine. the seats are comfortable. THE WORST THING ABOUT OWNING THE CAR IS HAVING TO TAKE IT TO A FORD OR MERCURY DEALERSHIP. I HAD SPRING GUARDS INSTALLED ON THE FRONT STRUT (AS PART OF A RECALL) AND HAD TO RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY MADE A LOUD NOISE WHEN I DROVE OVER SPEED BUMPS. IT TOOK 8 VISIT AND THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TO FINALLY FIX THE A/C WATER LEAK I HAD INSIDE THE CAR.

  • Nothing to get excited about - 1998 Mercury Mystique

I bought my mystique sport when I got my licence 5 years ago. I bought it around 70k miles and now it has just over 100k. All I can really say is you get what you pay for. Its spent its fair share of time in the shop and I wouldnt really rely on it more than I have to to take an extended trip over a couple hours. That being said it was in an accident that Im sure rattled some parts, causing some of the problems Ive had. It can be somewhat fun to drive, although its by no means a particuarly fast car. The sunroof leaks (directly on my crotch) and Ive had the overhead cabin lights just completely fall out. Not the worst 1st car, but Im looking to trade up asap

  • Mistake - 1998 Mercury Mystique

Purchased car from dealer used as a fleet vehicle with 24K miles. Car ran great up until 03 with barely 90K miles transmission completely failed! Tranny man tells me "I see alot of these things with exactly same milage... transmission is full of weak parts" Had him put in used mystique tranny with 60K on it. Only got 12K more miles off it. Ford has lost me for good. I will stick to Honda/Toyota from now on.

This is a nice car, but not exciting. My particular Mystique has a 4 cyl. engine, and I wish it had a six. It has been very dependable, still runs quiet. Fit and finish has held up very well. All in all, a nice family car for small kids, but not exciting.

  • Great Little Car - 1998 Mercury Mystique

I bought this car brand new, have taken good care of it for the most part. It has had a lot of recalls, but they were little things and didnt take the dealership long to take care of them. I have had little problems with the car, had to have the AC redone, only have replaced the front brakes twice, and am currently having the back brakes done too, which isnt a necessity yet, but thought it was time to do it since the front ones needed new pads. I have found it is great in the snow, I have done better with it than people that own trucks. It is one of the best cars I have had and/or driven in my life. I have heard it called the "Mistake", but so far it hasnt been one for me.

I purchased my Mystique new. Since 98 I have had several recalls, problems with the AC leaking on the floor board runing the carpet beneath. Sensors, check engine lights etc.The plastic headlight covers fog over, a local company repaired them for 150. Something like that should be covered by mercury, for safty if nothing else. It soes effect your night vision. The grill had to be replaced due to pitting, they were suppose to put a silver one on and put a smoke color instead, said they no longer carried the silver!! Go figure!! HOWEVER, my favorite is the Transmission falling apart with only 60,000.!! Im sure I am missing something.....

Ive never had to put a dollar into repairing this car. It is absolutely amazing, I love the fuel economy, the pick up, the interior. Everything is in such amazing shape, and Ive had this car for three years now, its almost 10 years old, and it drives like its brand new! I recommend this car to anyone whos a Mercury/Ford Fan. This is one of the best cars they have ever made.

  • 165000 and still going good - 1998 Mercury Mystique
    By -

Bought my car in 2004 with 62,000 miles on it for $3000. I have been driving it ever since. Just rolled over 165,000 and the car still runs just as good as when I got it. Along the way Ive replaced an alternator, a set of rear shocks, and a belt pulley. Other than that just oil changes every 3000 and its good to go. Finally purchased a new primary car but I am keeping my Mercury until in dies.
