This Year's Model Updates:

These guys are still on a roll. Last year, Mercedes introduced an all-new sport coupe that is an amalgamation of C- and SLK-Class technologies, available this year with a larger engine in the CLK 430 model, and now they're rolling out the CLK 320 Cabriolet, a convertible version of the fabulous little car.

Pros:
  • Luxurious, athletic and strikingly handsome.

I picked up my 99 CLK 430 for a song...and at 131,000 miles it runs and drives like new. The interior is flawless, leather seats show no wear and tear whatsoever. Power to spare, which is very evident when pulling onto an interstate vs my prior car, a V6 Accord. However, the Accords ride was far better, the trade-off of a drivers car. It is, however, much quieter and despite being 9 years older, feels more solid and well-built (its German-built, mine has AMG trim) than the Accord. Now the rest of the story--its a salvage car, was in an accident that took out the drivers side front fender and bumper. Was repaired and cannot tell it was ever touched, no consequences are evident.

Wonderful car, very smooth, quite fast. I upgraded to 17" AMG wheels, same as a CLK430 and this improved the appearance and the handling. The headliner had to be replaced to correct moonroof noise problems.

  • Hi-maintainance beauty - 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class

In a nutshell, this cars very attractive, but a real lemon. Ive taken it in to the dealership 8 times in a little over a year. Engine was torn down and rebuilt, amongst other obnoxious and ridiculous episodes. MD- DC dealership and MBUSA have completely turned a blind eye to me and I am considering legal action.

Fun car to drive, but maintenance issues continue to dog it; a refelciton of MBenzs increased model line and production I suspect. Poor choic eo Michelin Pilot on 18" wheels; Ive had to replace six tires in less than two years for wear (at 43K miles?), and for punctures that were not fixable due to the low aspect ratio. Gets expensive at $340/tire... Also had relaibility problems (and dealer problems at MBenz in Pleasanton) for rain sensing windshield, broken sunroof switch, broken climate contorl fan, and broken gas gauge. Sure is great to drive and handles very well at high speed, but cost/mile is very high.

I purchased my CLK 430 last February when it had roughly 37k on the odometer. I have placed about 6k on it since and have had absolutely no problems at all. The vehicle was a Starmark Certified Pre-owned car, which may be why I havent had any trouble. The previous driver had leased it and told me he had it in for unscheduled service on two occasions, both minor.

  • MB should not have redesigned it - 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class

I purchased this car new and still have it after almost 9 years. I was driving a Dodge Avenger back in 1998 and saw this car on the road. The next day I was at MB dealership and ordered one with every possible option except for ski sack. The 3.2L engine is more than I need but it accelerates smoothly without any delays or gaps until you go above 60. The car is still the best looking vehicle on the road. Too bad MB had to redesign the look of it, I would have bought another one again. Now, I am keeping it. Ive had mostly electrical problems including failed front computer twice and blown bulbs here and there but nothing major. Sometimes the car fails to start on first crank in any weather.

  • CLK 320 Coupe - 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class

Ive had the car for over three years = I bought it out of a lease. It looks and drives great. Not as sporty a ride as some other coupes available, especially accelerating from low speed, but its great for highway driving. It runs smoothly and quiet at high speeds. Steering is precise, though not as sharp as a Porsche. The interior has held up very well despite extensive use, and the exterior look of the car is aging well.

From the first time I ever laid my eyes on the CLK I knew I had to have it. I had to wait a couple of years to fit it into my price range but alas that time has come. So far the car is magnificent. From the look and feel to the pick-up and speed. I havent had too much time with it but can tell that this car will never lose my interest.

Overall this is a great car. With the top up it is much quieter than most sedans, and with the top down it is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Everyone loves and envys this 7 year old car. Chrome AMG wheels really dress the car up.

  • Built to Last - 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class

Bought this car as a used Starmark auto the year it came out and having driven it for 10 years now I have had almost zero repairs other than standard maintenance. Recently my car was hit hard by another car right at the drivers door and both the car and I were just fine-not the same with their car. This car is a tank that is light on its feet, beautiful to drive and look at and it has performed beyond expectation. Only drawback are the upkeep on the low profile front tires which require changing often.
