This Year's Model Updates:

Mazda's first sport-utility vehicle since the departure of the Navajo half a decade ago, the Tribute combines car-like ride and handling with the ability to go in the snow and tote up to five passengers and a healthy amount of their luggage. With the most powerful V6 in its class, in addition to handsome looks and a spacious cabin, the Tribute should find huge success despite an increasingly crowded small-SUV marketplace.

Pros:
  • Stout V6 power, rugged good looks, roomy cabin, attractive pricing.
Cons:
  • Weak standard four-cylinder engine, no low-range transfer case.

  • Fun to drive - 2001 Mazda Tribute

This “compact” SUV is not so compact after all. I’ve been driving the Tribute for over 2 years now without any major problems. It is roomy. The 6- cylinder engine has a fantastic acceleration if you compare it to similar cars from other manufacturers.

I really like the pep my Mazda has. It has been a really reliable vehicle and is roomy enough for our family of four.

  • Great vehicle - 2001 Mazda Tribute

Ive had my 2001 Tribute for over three years now and I am very happy with it. The engine performance is very adequate and I have had very few problems. The few problems I have had were covered under warranty. The service plan under the waranty has been great because it includes rental car coverage.

Loved the vehicle when I first got it and most of my 39 month lease. Lately it has developed electrical and mechanical problems. Warning lights come on when nothing is wrong. The windshield has developed a leak and worse of all the transmission shudders when shifting in and out of overdrive. I was going to by it but am now happy to return it to the dealer with only 26000 miles on it.

  • Tribute Overall enjoyed but.... - 2001 Mazda Tribute
    By -

Overall, I have enjoyed my Tribute since getting it in 2001 but I have had some problems. One losing power while driving-2001. In 2002, I had to have the brake lines and coolant lines replaced due to a leak as well as the stalling problem started again. The delearship replaced everything except for the engine and electrical lines. 2003, I had to have some of my electrical parts replaced-OBDII light came on one night and the next day my Tribute wouldnt start. But despite all of this-I really like my Tribute and even though I have had problems. So,Im thinking of either getting 2004 or 2005 model.

  • 3 years and Going - 2001 Mazda Tribute

My wife loves to drive it because of its get up and go. Drives as smooth and comfortable as a sports car. After 30,000 miles I took it in to replace pads. I was surprised when the rotors were worn down to nothing. Cost me $400. I was always curious why this car generated so much brake dust. At 45,000 miles, the car just stalled. I read other Tribute drivers experienced this. For the most part, we love this SUV...now if we can just get rid of that incessant rattle in the hatch.

  • Fun to drive (with lots of repairs) - 2001 Mazda Tribute

Everything that I have read that can go wrong with this particular model, has gone wrong with mine. EGR valve, intake manifold gaskets tie-rods, cad. converter, door ashtray falls out, doors stick, etc...Just put a grand into it at 153K. It runs great now, and I do still love to drive it, but with gas prices going up, and the 15MPG it actually gets, I am looking for something more economical!

  • Still like the Tribute - 2001 Mazda Tribute

I bought my Tribute in Sept. 2000.I had to have the transmission replaced less than a year later. It was under warranty but that didnt make me feel very good about the SUV. I havent had any other problems since. The moon roof is starting to stick a little but I do love the car, I now have 55,000 miles on it.

  • Good Choice - 2001 Mazda Tribute

We purchased this new based upon its styling and the good reviews we had read. The vehicle has performed extremely well in heavy snow, which was our main concern. Our V6 has plenty of get up and go when passing on the highway. We had problems with our moon roof twice, otherwise weve not had anything mechanically wrong. I have also been impressed with its braking capability. I recommend over the other vehicles in its class due to its overall power.

Tribute lx v6. unbelieveably roomy for a "small" suv. the v6 is very powerful and peppy! I have owned it for over 2 years and it has given me practically no problems to speak of. The best vehicle in its class by far!
