  • Just the right size, great value - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Weve had our Mazda5 for about 2 months now. (my other car is a 2003 Protege ES, so I like Mazdas...). You get a lot of car for your money - its quite roomy, very quiet and comfortable on the highway, gets good mileage considering the size of the car (were averaging 27 mpg overall), is reasonably fun to drive, and is perfect for a small family (were 2 adults, our 6 year old daughter, and a golden retriever). Acceleration is OK (not too different from my Protege), but its certainly not overpowered. ;-) Handling is pretty good, considering size of car (although I notice a lot of front end dive when braking). Brakes feel soft and underpowered. Great road trip car.

I believe this is a great vehicle for young families. The third row seats are essentially jump seats for kids. You can cram people back there for very short drives only. Very easy to drive, but be warned the seats are very firm (Mazda explains this as being "sport seats" - decide for yourself). The drivers seat now has multiple squeaks within the seat, starting to drive me crazy. I get 24-25 miles per gallon, with a mix of city/highway driving which I think is poor for a 2.3L 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission. Perhaps a bigger engine or 5 speed automatic transmission would help. Shame on Mazda for not properly advertising this vehicle - could probably double sales.

  • 06 Mazda 5/Great Concept - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Purchased Touring 5 new in06. 4sp ATM. Have 86,000 mix of city and hwy miles. Dealer serviced since new. Overall a great car to drive, very responsive. Great on gas at avg 26 mpg. Tire wear has been a problem, even with reg interval rotations, balance and alignments. Will be needing a third set of tires soon, and they are expensive. Not much traction in snow. Easy to get in and out of. Seats are not very comfortable for long drives. Sub par interior fit and trim. Great sound system...drowns out noise from "cupped" tire rumble. Overall a great little van, but more suited for tooling around town than for taking road trips. Would buy again if the tire wear issue were addressed.

  • Senior Citizen - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

We chose this vehicle for ease of entry and exit of front and middle row seats and this has proven to be an important feature for senior persons, especially for those with moderate mobility limitations. As senior owners, we have learned to miss having a front passenger arm rest for left arm. Other than for the missing arm rest, we have been very pleased with this vehicle for over 12,000 miles. Mileage ranges between 24 to 29 mpg.

  • A Great Mini Minivan - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

The Mazda5 is a great car for the right family. We have two kids and when we add the dog, we are filling the vehicle. We bought a clamshell for long trips and that seemed to solve our problem for space. It drives great, really zippy, and it looks great too! We are very happy with the gas mileage, averaging 23 miles a gallon around town and its got all the latest safety airbags. I think the Mazda5 is great car and a great value for the money.

  • The good and the bad - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Good engine, great manual transmission. Car handles very well. 25 mpg in mixed city/hwy driving. The remote entry keys work less than half the time. Good thing I can still lock/unlock the doors manually. Absolutely terrible in snowy/icy conditions due to slick performance tires. Occasional strange lurch in 2nd gear. This is a small, economical minivan, not to be confused with a Honda Odyssey. Compare it to other compact cars, not the big maxivans weighing half a ton more. Overall, a pleasant driving experience. Good, reliable, economical transportation. No mechanical problems after 23000 miles, except as noted above.

  • Good for a few years.... - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

First, I really, really enjoy driving this car! Had it almost 2.5 yrs. We are a family of 5. (Kids are 2,4,6yrs)Have few overall complaints, the biggest being driving in snow: it doesnt. It goes NOWHERE in snow. Never experienced anything like it before. Regarding tires, our local mechanic put the new ones on (since weve owned it, weve replaced just once) and told us that wed have to make rotating them a priority in order to help with wear. He suggested once every other oil change. (So, every 6,000 miles.) This car looks good (esp with sunroof), gets good MPG, great sound system, gets around easily. Other moms tell me frequently they love my "can" (Car/van)!!

Just what I expected it to be. Great handling, great look, exact amount of room for my family, fun to drive and a great gas mileage and great price for my budget.

  • watch out for electrical gremlins! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Bought new 06 GT 5 speed manual. I really enjoy driving this van and I get great mileage. But during cold weather the e-brake doesnt work all the time and the dealership has tried to fix this 6 times. They have now replaced the calipers on one side only. Also, the headlights flash on and off on their own. I live outside the city so it really is noticeable on the highway when the headlights turn off for two seconds or more. They cycle through 9 or 10 times on and off so it looks like I am warning of a police radar trap ahead! NOT FUNNY! My last trip through the mountains the headlights turned off 34 times over 300 miles.

  • Not Bad for the Price - 2006 Mazda Mazda5
    By -

Just purchased the Mazda5. So far so good. I went from a Mercury Mountaineer fully loaded to a wagon/van. More out of the want to spend less on gas. Plus I needed the extra space. I love the third row seating! I love the fact that my kids ( still in booster/car seats) cant kick each other. I love that even though it is considered slightly minivan-ish, the car doesnt make me feel old.
