This Year's Model Updates:

The Mazda 5 is a new, affordably priced compact minivan that seats six.

Pros:
  • Low price, generous features list, precise steering, stellar fuel economy for a minivan.
Cons:
  • Can seem underpowered when fully loaded with people and gear, extremely cramped third row.

After looking at minivans - we ran into the Mazda5. Seating for 6, good gas mileage, not as large as a minivan, and costs a lot less. A few test drives and we bought one. Back seats fold for dog transport or other items. Good overall size for a family of 4. Mirrored window tinting makes for reflections that can be annoying.

  • Like brand new! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Ive had my Mazda5 for over three years now and with almost 90,000 miles on the odo, I can think of so few flaws that I cant imagine buying any other vehicle as a replacement in a year or so. Lets see.....it eats tires (what front-drive automobile doesnt?) The carpet is on the cheap side (especially in the Northeast with snow and salt.) There is a big chip in the hood that is starting to rust. The battery has been replaced. Everything else (including the brakes) are as-purchased. The quality is absolutely astounding...not a squeak or rattle on the entire vehicle and the highway ride seems to be getting better over time. The manual transmission is sweeter than the icing on any cake.

  • Cheaply-Made Piece of Garbage! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Lets see, first off the remote locking system lasted, at most, for 6 months. It no longer works properly and the dealership had no idea of how to fix it. Secondly the tire wear -- which so many people have already described. Cars a little over 4 years old and needs its second set of replacement tires. Thirdly, the AC and air vents mysteriously blow hot air at me no matter what settings I use. Fourth, I hit a pothole and blew the transmission system, which was fortunately covered by Mazda. However it took Cooley 3 weeks to fix it. They went to put the new transmission into the car, and dropped it. Had to order a new one. Piece of crap from a shoddy dealer. VERY disappointed. Never again!

  • Pleased for the price - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Pleased with the car - it has served its purpose as a family transporter for a family with 4 little ones, but it is quickly becoming too small. But for the price, I cannot complain - other than a few minor quality issues, it has been a reliable method of transportation.

  • Just purchased! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Just purchased this vehicle used from a Chevy dealer. They broke the key, so all I have for now is a key that flips out and no remote access for lock/unlock, but have a new key on order ($250). The car sounds like a tin can when starting up, not sure if that is normal or not. I also have to complain about the WEAK a/c. I live in Louisiana where it has been over 100 degrees the past two weeks. Turn the air on high and it barely does justice. I love driving to work in this micro-van, I do about 70-75. Until I hit a bump, it sounds like it is going to fall apart. I have read about suspension issues, so I am going to have the dealer check it out. Overall, the looks got me on this!! Love it!!

  • Great Car! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

Just bought this car after much consideration. Considered many other choices i.e. minivans (Odyssey, Sienna, MPV), station wagons/suvs (Forester, Vue, Tucson, HHR, XB). This will be mainly used for carrying 2 adults and 2 toddlers with enough room to spare for a doggy carrier and luggage. Although not as comfortable as my Diamante, its not too bad. None offered the value, efficiency and utilitarianism of the Mazda5. Not a speed demon because of the extra 500 lbs, the 4 cylinder engine holds its own on the highway. Surprisingly quick and nimble while maneuvering around the city keeping the tradition of zoom zoom alive. The brakes on this thing are excellent, comparable to a go kart!

This is a combination thats been missing: a crisp-handling stickshift minivan from Japan. (Ok, its available in automatic, too.) I want a reliable car thats fun to drive, but I dont want to have to rent a truck to bring home a TV or take newspapers to the recycling center. Mazda has taken the compact chassis of the Mazda 3 and mounted a little minivan on it -- the size of a station wagon, but the three-row seating and sliding doors that define a minivan. The performance is not that of a 250hp six, but neither is the gas mileage. Thanks, Mazda, for bringing the 5speed model to the US, not just to Europe. The Mazda 5 is sibling to the spunky Mazda 3, not the sedate Mazda MPV.

  • FInally got our Mazda5! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

After waiting 2 months we finally got our car. We had purchased it right before the recall so we didnt even see it until a week ago. This car drives smoother than any other vehicle Ive driven. It has tons of zip yet lots of space in the interior. What a difference compared to our 1999 Ford Windstar that just died on us. The Mazda5 is also very quiet in the interior. Ive almost turned the key not realizing it was on. And on the highway it performs well and is a quiet ride. Im also impressed with how little gas this vehicle uses. After having a Windstar (glug, glug) I dont have to gas up as often. In the week Ive driven Ive only had to fill up once and I drive a lot.

Got the manual transmission. Love it. Handles great. I have 2 teenagers and they love the room that it gives them, not to mention the reclining back seats. Wont need the 3rd row much but will be perfect for that extra kid every now & then. Only complaint, I had the car in my possession for 10 hours and woke up to frozen door latches. 3 of 4 doors wouldnt latch shut. Mazda gave me a free loaner for the weekend and I picked it up Monday early afternoon. Steering wheel mounted audio and cruise controls are a nice perk that youd pay for in most other vehicles. Has all the bells and whistles standard that I would want. Passenger front seat should have an armrest.

  • Perfect fit! - 2006 Mazda Mazda5

I just picked up my new 5 so I havent put very many miles on it yet. To my knowledge it is the first one sold in my area. I was looking at the Mazda 3 and Toyota Matrix when I saw the 5 on the lot. The Mazda 5 is much larger inside and out. While I was impressed with both the Matrix and Mazda 3 (I need the cargo space of a small wagon) the 5 has greater space in the passenger and cargos areas. At 64" headroom is always an important measurement for me. And even with the moonroof the 5 had 2 to 3 inches more headroom than the smaller wagons. The ride, steering and braking are wonderfully smooth. The engine pulls strong with no vibration. The 3 and the Matrix feel harsh by comparison.
