  • Just bought - 2000 Mazda 626

I just bought my 626, used of course, but I think its going to be a good investment. I love the body style and its running great except for the hiccup with first gear. Ive read some of the previous reviews and am worried about the transmission, but my dealer offers a warranty on it for 2 years. I think I will take one persons advice and install a tranny cooler as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone for their great reviews and heads up! I hope this car will take me pretty far.

This is the first new car my wife or myself have ever purchased. We got it b/c, at the time, it had all the features we wanted at only $20,500. It is an ES (top trim) V6 with a 5 spd trans. The car also has ABS, Traction Control, Sunroof, fog lights, etc... every option available. We owned it for 2 yrs and over 50K miles and have not had a problem except for a broken cassette player. I absolutely love this car, especially, when I think about spending ~$10K less for something comparible.

Replaced transmission (about $800.00 used) but bought car for $500.00, great exterior condition, black with excellent paint. Will install a tranny cooler since none on car from factory. I drive about 50-60 miles a day and get satisfactory mpg. Best used car I ever bought. Need to fix A/C. Looks like a slow leak. Transmissions are hard to come by used, expect about $900-$1400 rebuilt with warranty. Shifts hard into 2nd gear, also hard on the downshift to 1st. Most gear heads i speak to say this is fine. If motor goes I will replace with 6 cyl.

I have my car for a 1.5 years and have had no problems. I had to replace freon which kind of annoyed me cause I really think the car came with it low. Car handles well, looks great and the V6 model is plenty fast. I do not like the downshift feature of the automatic sometimes it is a little rough. I have not noticed the engine noise like so many posting, but I play my music loud. I definately recommend this car over Camry and Honda. I am a previous Camry owner and this handles much better.

I bought my 626 4-cyl auto. a year old and 14K on the odometer. It has been a great car! This is a superb highway car and handled an Ohio winter on all- season radials with no problems. The steering feel on this car is simply outstanding. You just point the car where you want to go and it goes! Overall, I would buy this car again in a heartbeat!

  • Best daily grind car - 2000 Mazda 626

Very comfortable, engine buzzy at 75 mph, slow pick up - dont even bother to rev it past 3500 rpms, handles great, avg. 27.5 mpg mostly city driving. Awesome car for a practical lifestyle. I love it - best beater, daily grind car!

  • Fun with 5 speed, but materials/build okay - 2000 Mazda 626

This car is my 2nd 626 and 3rd Mazda. The others were turbo 4 cylinders which are still lasting longer than I imagined. My current 6s V6 is fun to drive and makes great high revving sounds, but is a bit low on torque. What I have found quality-wise leads me to believe it will not hold together like my circa 80s cars did. So far the coolant expansion tank has sprung a leak, so it was replaced. The drivers door power lock motor ate itself making a horribly loud noise while operating. Both are common issues for this model, and it did help that both parts were acquired from the dealer for around $50. I refuse to blame these quirks on US assembly, as my previous ones were both US & Japanese made and both were excellent.

  • 30K MPY & 25 mpg - 2000 Mazda 626

Weve had our Chestnut 5 spd ES for 1.5 years and put on 45,000 miles. (We have a 93 & a 97 in the family as well.) I thought it would get better mileage than the auto but apparently the final gear ratio on the Automatic OD must be higher, (about 3700 rpm at 75 mph; which it will do all day w/o complaint). No lack of punch off the line however and the tires show it. Feels heavier yet less solid in the curves than my 84 Saab 900 (which got 30.5 mpg) but is so much better

  • Excellent car for the money - 2000 Mazda 626

My 2000 626 LX is coming up on 90,000 trouble free miles. All I have ever done is normal maintenance. Although some more horsepower might be nice, I like the great gas mileage, excellent handling, and excellent reliability. It is a fun car to drive. This was my first Mazda and I have already bought a 2nd Mazda. Great Car!
