This Year's Model Updates:

The Kia Sedona is all-new for 2006. It's longer and wider than its predecessor, with a nearly 15-percent improvement in passenger room. Horsepower is up 49 from the previous generation thanks to a new 3.8-liter, 244-hp V6. The Sedona's standard features list has been expanded to include fold-flat third-row seating; power-sliding doors and a power liftgate have been added as options. ABS and traction control are now standard, along with front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Pros:
  • Smooth and quiet ride, comfortable interior with lots of cupholders and storage bins, solid build quality, lengthy warranty coverage.
Cons:
  • Handling and steering response could be better, cramped third row.

  • Functional but Unreliable - 2006 Kia Sedona

We purchased this van for our expanding family in August 2006. I think after two years I can provide good insight. The van is comfortable and great on long trips, even with kids. It will swallow anything. The powertrain is smooth and powerful enough, if not all that responsive. Fuel economy is probably what can be expected from a 4500 lb minivan, I get 16 mpg in the city. The main problem is reliability. I have had trouble mainly with the brakes, an O2 sensor, and I had a fuel pump go out. I have warped two sets of front rotors in less than 25,000 miles, and Kia wont cover the second set under warranty even though they only lasted 10,000 miles. Beware of this issue on this van.

  • Transmission problem - 2006 Kia Sedona

Love the vehicle but have started having transmission/starting problems. Would not start in Park, dealer adjusted cable, now having trouble getting into Drive. Maybe dealer tech needs training. I am bringing it back to get fixed again. Only have 17K miles. Also drivers side passenger door sometimes will stay in open position and sometimes not, dealer lubricated but still is intermittent. I think it may be that the mechanics need more training.

As my wife is handicapped and she was having difficulty in entering our 2003 Dodge Sport Van, I visited every different dealership in our area and measured every minivan for seat height etc. We then proceeded to try those vans with the lowest threshold etc. and the Kia won hands down as my wife slid in with no problems. We purchased the vehicle after a test drive and we both find it very comfortable and easy to drive. This is a top of the line unit, solid, and relatively quiet even with the sun roof in the open position. Much quieter than the Dodge Caravan. Gas mileage has been great. 25mpg city/highway average and I anticipate 30/34 mpg on straight highway at 65/70 mph. A great van for the dollar.

  • Waiting for results - 2006 Kia Sedona

This is my first minivan purchase; everything else I have owned has been a car, but starting a new family persuaded me into the "Family" car. Overall, I love the van, the features, and space. Comparing it to other competitors, I found that it felt more solid and car-like than others. The price was also significantly lower for equivalent features. Theyve built a winner I think. A couple of problems that still need to be fixed though. At 1200 miles, the check engine light came on because of misfiring. Ever since then it has been back in the shop every 750 miles or so, and they still dont know what is wrong with it. Hopefully gas mileage will go up after this problem is fixed.

  • My other car is a Camaro SS - 2006 Kia Sedona

My other cars are a 1999 Camaro SS and a 1996 Impala SS, so I am used to vehicles with power and good handling. Within its limits (it is a minvan) the Kias handling is excellent and the engine makes good power under all conditions. Amazing for a 4500 lbs minivan. My whole family loves this vehicle.

  • Great Family Vehicle - 2006 Kia Sedona

We purchased this minivan in August 2006 to accommodate our expected second child. Minivans arent cool, but for functionality and practicality for families, they really cant be beat. We purchased this van due to the value, warranty, and exceptional safety ratings, even for the base model. The van drives very well and is very comfortable on long trips. I am 6 4" and dont get fatigued during long trips. The engine is smooth and very adequate. Handling is wobbly, but it is a van not a sports car. Stereo very good for the base model. Fuel economy a little worse than expected. This thing will swallow a Volkswagen, yet is as easy to park and maneuver as my old honda civic.

  • Problems getting more frequent. - 2006 Kia Sedona

Ive driven this van for our work the last four years. Good stuff first, this van rides really nice, and is really quiet on the freeway. The engine is nice, refined. MPGs are pretty decent for such a huge vehicle- we get 22-23, pretty decent. Design wise, it works fine. I do wish the seat scoots back a little further, Im only 510". At about 12K miles, the front rotors warped. The rear hatch started leaking, we couldnt figure out why the car stunk so bad. We needed a new battery at about 19K miles. Now, at 40K, the rear hatch is leaking again, the a/c needs recharge, the suspension groans. The transmission kind of slips and cant hold gears sometimes, and the starter needed replacement.

  • Interior Needs Do Over - 2006 Kia Sedona

My new Sedona is a great car for the money. So far, much more reliable than my 2000 AWD Caravan. But the interior needs a little more thought in the layout. It is a great handling car and much more fuel efficient.

I enjoy driving the Sedona. The sound and power of the engine is pleasing. The size is just right for my family. I saved money on a new sofa by avoiding the delivery charge and picking it up at the warehouse myself. It fit perfectly in the Kia. We get 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Good amount of standard features for a base model. Paint looks good and is holding up well. Steering wheel was crooked from factory, interior grab handle came loose, fuel line adjusted, a/c compressor noise fixed, rubber windshield seal came lose, driver side window seal folded under. All problems fixed for free by dealer. I did expect fewer problems from a new vehicle. We have 22,000 miles on our van.

  • Where is the space? - 2006 Kia Sedona
    By -

I just traded my 00 Dodge Caravan AWD in for a 06 Kia Sedona LX. I have only driven it 75 miles. I was used to having more storage space in my Caravan. No under the seat drawer to put misc stuff. Also, that fold down tray between the driver and passenger is a real waste. For moms who drive, where do you put your purse, the Kleenex box and all those little things you like to keep at hand? I like the cargo net that I had in my Caravan. I have the manual seat adjustment and am having a hard time getting the seat to fit me. With long legs and short torso, I use the lever to raise the seat but it also moves it forward cramping my legs. The sunglass holder only hold small glasses.
