Overview & Reviews
Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.
Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

Jeep Liberty 2004 - 2005 Jeep Liberty
By Ursula - March 10 - 5:26 amIt handles great, and maneuvers like a car. Easy to see all around, even for short people (5.3"). Small turning radius.

Happy.......with a few quirks - 2005 Jeep Liberty
By stacey - March 7 - 11:56 amIn the over-all we love our liberty! Mpgs are not stellar but considering shes a go any where 4x4 and 5400 lbs., not bad! No Major problems but the factory specified routine maintenance costs a small fortune. Fun, safe, peppy (3.7l) comfortable and capable on road and off. One annoying rattle emanating from the rear swing- gate/Glass region with no resolution to the problem in sight, many liberty owners with the same complaint! Very maddening considering a 24k price tag! Maybe "its a Jeep thing" haha. Other than that were pleased, lets hope it has the longevity of the Honda crv that we chose it over! Long live the liberty!

The Lil Jeep that could! - 2004 Jeep Liberty
By John Chadwick - March 2 - 8:20 pmIve owned large SUVs and trucks. I am surprised that so many people overlook and underestimate this vehicle. Ive taken my Liberty off-road and have yet to see a Hummer or Ford F150/Explorer out there with the rest of us Jeeps. Where are these big bad dudes?

Long Live Liberty!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 2003 Jeep Liberty
By AlphaSigBU - March 2 - 10:00 amNew Liberty is fun to drive and gets a lot of interest on the streets. Powerful and responsive. Love all the options and 3.7L 4X4 with 210 horses under the hood! Got mine with a 7 year 70K bumper to bumper for 19,700! Drove Sante Fe, Escape and Tribute.....nothing compares to the Liberty.....Great job JEEP!

Wished we hadnt gotten it. - 2007 Jeep Liberty
By JuJusMama - March 1 - 12:06 pmWe purchased this vehicle as a replacement for a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. With a new baby we needed more room. The 2007 Jeep Liberty Limited is not the vehicle for a growing family. The owners manual doesnt even fit in the glovebox (theres no storage). The trunk is very tiny. I thought I could live with the back hinge door, but its annoying and heavy. We have had a lot of problems with the front windows not rolling up properly and have taken it to the dealership 3 times, they basically cant fix it. The gas mileage is terrible. I get 18 mpg. The doors dont close properly, you have to slam them shut. Its not comfortable on a long trip. Wish we hadnt bought it!

great experience - 2005 Jeep Liberty
By vicki hardin - February 27 - 6:00 amI worked for a Jeep dealership & I love the Grand Cherokee. But the Liberty is so much fun to drive. It has that European style handling and driving. I wish it got better gas mileage. Dont like the front end on the 2005s. My 2004 looks robust and demanding me to drive it. And I do.

Sluggish and Jerky - 2004 Jeep Liberty
By jjbigs - February 26 - 6:06 pmI love the look but hate the performance. At slow speeds it lurches when you step on the gas. Climbing and hill in goes to a higher gear instead of downshifting. At all other times, it is fun to drive and very comfortable. Looks good on the road. Even with the sound upgrade, the stereo is poor.
