Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

I have had my Liberty for almost 4 years now and I have really enjoyed it. Its been great, Ive had no major issues with the vehicle at all. I purchased it used and I have been very pleased, this had been my first used car purchase ever so I was a bit leery at first. Im very satisfied with my choice.

I love my Liberty! This a all around great SUV with good looks inside and out, strong engine, solid feel, and perfect size. Compared to other vehicles in its class it is the best by far. No mechanical problems to date. For its weight of 4000 (read solid feel), it handles and performs well when needed, great for short trips to the mall (easy parking) or long camping trips fully loaded up.

  • Excellent - 2008 Jeep Liberty

I like my 2008 Sport 4x4 Liberty. It is much more comfortable than my old pickup truck. Gas mileage is as reported (4x4 15/21 mpg). I just took a trip of 900 miles loaded with my stuff (2wd mode) in the cargo area to confirm. This SUV is way off the ground and from measurements up to the antenna stands about 6 6". So be sure it can fit into your garage. The response seems a bit sluggish when accelerating, but it is a heavy vehicle. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

  • Could use some improvement - 2007 Jeep Liberty

Overall my Liberty has been a decent vehicle. Handles mountain snowstorms with ease. Like everyone else I have had issues with window regulators failing. Also had to replace the transmission after only 30k miles. Gas mileage isnt great but no surprise with an SUV.

  • Surprisingly Great - 2006 Jeep Liberty

Having had Jeeps in the family for decades, the Liberty seemed neither fish nor fowl. However, when we needed another vehicle, an unplanned visit to a jeep dealer resulted in a great surprise. The Liberty is one great Jeep. Yes you need to be a Jeep fan, not a trend setter or fashionista. Just someone that mucks around in the country and in the city. WOW what a great little Jeep.

  • Liberty Review - 2004 Jeep Liberty

This is my second Liberty. First 2003 model was hit by a 18" diameter tree that fell into the road while driving at 40 mph. Hit at left side "A" pillar and vehicle drove under. All windows but right side shattered but roof was sturdy enough to prevent any injury to me,my wife, and 4 yr old son who was in the back. Vehicle was totaled so I got a 2004 Liberty a week later. I love the manual transmission; much more sporty feeling than automatic I test drove. Better mileage too. My 2003 manual started out at approx 18.5 mpg in mixed driving. Then increased to 19.5 around 5000 miles as engine broke in. A K&N air filter and synthetic oil for engine/differentials,increased MPG to 20.5/22.5 HWY.

  • Jeep forever - 2007 Jeep Liberty

I just bought my first Jeep. I love it and wouldnt go back. I have already taken it up to the mountains and had some memorable fun with my son. I looked for a very long time at different outfits and I kept coming back to the Liberty. I bought the sport but am very happy that if I want to later on I can add anything I would like to it and have it have the factory look. It handles great and has great get up and go. Coming from a girl who had a sports car I really love that. I love looking at it dirty or clean, its perfect.
