Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Great car - 2004 Jeep Liberty

Vehicle rides firm simular to MB, BMW etc, all wheels stay on ground for better control etc. Great to drive on beach and mountains. Plenty of power to pull my 17ft boat. No problems to date. We feel we got what we paid for knowing fuel mileage is low ave. 18-21 mph.

Great curb appeal, solid build, low road noise, powerful V6 engine, great steering response, good interior design, great 4WD system, poor gas mileage for a V6. Overall I love the new Liberty and would recommend to anyone looking to purchase a compact SUV.

The fit and finish is the best I have experienced of all the new cars I have owned. After 18k miles it has been trouble free. This is outstanding when you consier this is an early production of a new model. No bugs no major recalls, they seemed to get it right on the first try.

It is a great vehicle that needs just a few changes, see below, that would cost very little, but make the vehicle a 10 rating across the board except for the poor gas mileage.

  • Excellent. - 2003 Jeep Liberty

Just the best car I had. Im European and I drove many kind of cars from Europe and also here in the US. It is just the best car Ive ever drive. Its comfortable, powerful and Fun. We are a family with one baby, its just the perfect car with the right amount of space. The consumption is good for the category (24mpg). Im in heaven when I go Off-Road. The car has the best attitude. Another thing, No Noise and every single detail is tough. Incredible!

  • Liberty Renegade Rocks! - 2006 Jeep Liberty
    By -

We bought our Jeep Liberty 3 months ago and we love it. The Jeep is more comfortable on pavement than what some reviewers are saying, but this SUV really performs off-road. Weve driven our Jeep on dirt roads, along trails, over tall grass and brush and on the beach. The tough 4x4 handled it all in stride and our 4 speed auto transmission is solid on road and off. The Renegade package makes it look tough and ready for anything, which we really liked. Unlike the other Liberty trims, the Renegade features a flatter hood without the rounded sides which makes it look more like a traditional Jeep. The bolted on fender look and mounted fog lamps adds to the ready for the offroad appearance.

  • Jeep Liberty 2.8 CRD - 2005 Jeep Liberty

As fuel prices started to rise I took the Liberty 2.8 CRD for a spin; after the test ride I traded my 2002 Renegade in for it. My last Liberty saved me from serious injury when I hit a deer head on at 60MPH and only did cosmetic damage to it. The diesel Jeep has as much power as the 6 cylinder. I average about 24 miles a gallon in mixed driving and it is one of the most fun cars I have ever owned. Im 64" and it is a little tight but I have driven it all over the east coast with my wife and 3 kids. I am a law enforcement officer and I have to be able to get to work under any conditions and the Liberty has done that for me. The Jeep is a real 4WD and gets the job done.

  • BIODIESEL ready Sweet economy 4WD SUV - 2005 Jeep Liberty

They could have easily made the diesel get better mileage. The seats need more cushion - nice leather surface but they are hard as a rock on 8 hour trip. Feels like metal skeleton inside the seat is sticking in your thighs, maybe made for large heavy person? Windshield is almost straight up like a nice wind blocker reminds me of a Suzuki Samurai, worst jack system ever conceived - not very usable and takes forever to use, could use a particle filter for better mileage and lower emissions. Auto Only shifts gears at certain speeds, 4th at 50mph. Should be variable and able to hit 5th in city driving 40-45. Really nice to tow with, even pulling large trailers, like my 30, 600# camper.

  • Fun with Liberty - 2003 Jeep Liberty

This SUV is really lots of fun to drive. Good visibility and an amazing turning radius. The seats feel hard at first, but offers good support. Lots of cargo room. What happened to the cross bars on the roof rails? My Jeep Grand Cherokee has them. The Liberty is a civilized Wrangler in many ways. It feels like a junior verson of the Grand Cherokee Laredo. Many similar controls.

  • A Jeep That Does It All - 2007 Jeep Liberty
    By -

This is my second Liberty, I bought my first one in 2004, (the window regulator wasnt an issue in that model). I love the Liberty for its carlike/suv appearance and towing capabilities. I am averaging 20-21+ mpg in combined city/highway driving. I bought the 2007 knowing that the window regulators were crap. However, it was still under factory warranty and I received such a good deal since it was a manufactures buyback that the savings made it worth the risk/hassle.
