Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

  • Sharp SUV - just bought - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Considered Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, Land Rover Freelander, but Liberty was the right price and IMHO the real SUV of the bunch. The Liberty doors shut with a perfect thunk, the noise level is right (hey it isnt supposed to be a limo), and for $21K its the sharpest vehicle out there. Highway cruising is nice and quiet, luggage capacity is fine for most of us. I just bought it, so have no info on reliability, but initial build quality seems very good -- no initial problems. I live in San Diego so bought the 2WD, hoping to save some weight/gas. Well see how it goes. So far, really happy with how it drives.

  • Window Regulators - Keep Breaking - 2006 Jeep Liberty

I too wanted one of these vehicles and mine is a CRD - diesel 2006. I loved this vehicle except the rear window regulators broke a year after I leased it. This year both rear window regulators have broken again within 4 months of each other. If Chrysler wont fix it I have no choice but to trade it or sell it and purchase another vehicle.

  • Fun to Drive! - 2003 Jeep Liberty

I love this car. Its peppy and fun to drive. Its good looking in and out. I have always had confidence in its performance when I took it out. It does not ride like a luxury car, but like the little SUV it is supposed to be. I would highly recommend it for the young and the young-at-heart.

  • My Liberty - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I just got it this past week so I am still learning more about it. I really like the ride. I traded in my 2003 Mustang GT because I wanted something a bit bigger. Its kind of better on gas than the V8 was ... thats for sure!

  • Never again Chrysler - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I bought my Liberty with the diesel Crd thinking I would get better mileage. Although that did prove to be true the cost of diesel went up and so it didnt make sence to have a diesel. The cost to maintain the diesel is higher than a gas engine. I have had so many problems with the egr valve and the boost pressure sensor, and the egr air flow control valve. I have contacted chrysler and they say TOO BAD Its out of warranty. As soon as I fix the egr (yes again) I am trading in this piece of junk . I have purchased a number of new chrysler vehicles over the years but no longer will I buy anything were they do not test their products and sell juck to the public. Good by chrysler and goo ridence

  • Not a good buy! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Happy when we purchased our Liberty in 2005 but since then, weve had to have the transmission rebuilt and u-joints replaced. The gas mileage is pitiful, too.

  • pleasantly surprised - 2006 Jeep Liberty

Compared to my Grand Cherokee, the Liberty is easier to park, more agile, and a better size for two people (no one ever rides in the back seats). My wife likes the two grab bars on the passenger side to help with her slight physical handicap. The late 06 models have chrome side strips, chrome luggage racks and chrome wheels. The carbon-brown/black wheel trim is a good color combination with the Atlantic blue body color. I will most likely buy another Liberty in 2009.

  • dont buy a jeep - 2003 Jeep Liberty

Liberty has got to be the worst riding vehicle I have ever owned. DEaler replaced front &rear springs & shocks after 8 months. Gas mileage sucked never got better then 16 mpg hwy. Had a fulsize extended cab 4x4 V8 that got 21 to 23 should have kept it.

Great SUV if you are looking for a manual transmission, but with a number of luxury appointments...including leather interior. Handles well, and SUPER fun to drive.
