Model Overview:

Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.

Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

Dont buy this vehicle. Im not kidding. It has extraordinary design defects and is a safety nightmare. It should be recall before someone gets killed. I have owned it for 13 months and to date it has been at the dealership for warranty repairs 19 times. Other consumers have the same problems...they start at approximately 15,000 miles and by the time you are at 25,000 miles youll be afraid to get behind the wheel. I have limped it into the dealership numerous times.

I love my Jeep Liberty! Besides the attractive appearance it is fun to drive. Not only is it quick, but it is powerful. It doesnt choke going uphill. Once you accelerate it just keeps on going, only getting stronger. My first SUV, but I love it!

The 18 months Ive been driving this vehicle have not experienced any mechanical problems and except for the gas mileage (15-17) am quite happy with this purchase. My only regret is not getting a brighter color then the dark green.

  • Jeep does what it was built for - 2008 Jeep Liberty

Owner for 9 months and 8,000 miles. The interior of the Liberty is chintzy at best. They are not built for comfort. If you read other reviews that complain about water leakage from the rear cargo area, they are absolutely right. The wiring harness at the top of the cargo door and the luggage rack both allow water to infiltrate and soak the carpet floor. The brake assist is cool on slopes but not when you wish to accelerate in emergency situations. The tow package is great. Be careful not to engage the 4WD by accident. MPG is aweful! I would not have bought mine without all the pricing incentives. I will begin to feed mine Wheaties and hope that it grows up to be a BMW someday.

  • Like my turbo diesel - 2005 Jeep Liberty

The turbo four cylinder diesel has provided about 25 miles per gallon for overall mileage - 23 mpg in winter. I needed something versatile and with decent mileage and have been very pleased with the diesel Liberty. I like it as an urban commuting vehicle because of the great turning radius and the good visibility makes it easy to drive and park. Mileage is very good for an SUV. Great vehicle for taking canoe and camping gear into the back woods. Very good off road. OK on freeway. Not luxurious, but it looks good and is well made. The bonus is the very good towing ability of the diesel engine. Not sure why Chrysler didnt build and promote this vehicle more. Its a sleeper, but a keeper!

Ive had my Liberty for a year. The car is comfortable and fun to drive. Gas mileage is about 19 mpg. Great SUV for running around town, rear seats fold down when to carry larger items and two adults can sit comfortably in the back. I highly recommend buying the Liberty and I will buy a second one in the future. Also, glove box does hold the owners manual.

No problems yet with windows. But I pulled a car out of a ditch and guess what? No tow hooks or solid bumper to put a chain on! All plastic, this is a Jeep right? Just enough room to fit a nice 8 pointer in! Fun to drive in the woods and mud.

  • Worst vehicle Ive ever owned - 2008 Jeep Liberty

Dont buy this car. There are too many quality cars available today to waste your time and money on this piece of garbage. The engine and 6 speed manual transmission are pretty reliable, although poorly suited to the car. The engine is not powerful enough, has a microscopic power band, and the ratios are just too long. Below 3000 rpm theres no acceration, and above 4000 rpm its only good for turning gas into noise. While the powertrain has been reliable, literally every other thing jeep attached to it has not been. 4wd has failed twice for electronics, wiper switches, window switches, door lock switches, airbag sensor, door sensors, gas tank wont fill (replaced twice), shift boot falls apart, seat trim falls apart, spare tire doesnt stay tight and knocks around, wheels seem designed to deliver pebbles to the brake pads, brake pads cannot be secured and rattle constantly, car wont restart when warm, exhaust flex joint cannot be secured and periodically disconnects, entire interior vent system had to be replaced when an internal seal melted and jammed the actuators, multiple hvac fans have failed (noisily), and the list goes on. And on... I bought this car new with the lifetime powertrain warranty and lifetime maxcare. Even at $50 per work order and paying $35-$50/day for rental cars while the jeep is in service, it cost me $2000 this year to maintain this POS. I just dumped the thing yesterday... Id kept it for so long because I knew the warranty would protect me when something major failed... but eventually it bacame clear that the major expenses were not likely to fail, and the car was milking me dry, a few hundred dollars at a times. At one point this year, I had the car in for repair for three different unrelated issues in one week. Each time I picked it up, I couldnt even make it back to the house before something else crapped out. Another time it was in for service for two consecutive weeks, brought it home, and had something else fail the very next day. To wrap this up - do yourself a favor and dont buy this car.
