This Year's Model Updates:

An all-new diesel engine option makes its debut for the 2005 Jeep Liberty. Exterior appearance changes this year include a new front fascia, grille, foglamps, fender flares and body side moldings. Interior upgrades include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics and trim bezels and improved seat comfort. The Renegade model gets a flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards, as well as functional rock rails and four skid plates. A new six-speed manual transmission replaces last year's five-speed unit.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, economical diesel engine option, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Gas engines are rather thirsty at the pump, not as "carlike" on the street as most of its competitors, less cargo space than some of its competitors.

I havent owned a Jeep since 1985, but my new Liberty has made it worth the wait. This has got to be the most awesome Jeep ever. Look out Hummer!

Mostly I have stayed away from Jeeps but I saw a Diesel engine with a 5 speed automatic trans. I should have remembered American engineers cant mate diesel engines to auto transmissions, they do not understand torque. Problems, Turbo, fuel filter housing, trans filters(not covered $285) and a lot of odds and ends, rattles & squeaks. Sounds like a 40 year old station wagon. On trips I can pass some fuel stations but not many rest stops, the constant jarring of the little bumps in the road seem to magnify to my back and bottom. My travel range per day has been cut in half, but I do get a better chance to see America. It will haul a 4200 lb trailer 2600 miles each way at about 19 mpg.

  • Renegade Fun! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

Ive had my Jeep for 5 months and I love it. Gas mileage stinks but it is a very reliable off-roading vehicle. I love the light bar on top. It turns the woods into daylight at night.

  • Its all Jeep! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I have read previous reviews and will mainly reiterate what has been stated. It is all Jeep and is definitely no slouch. Very powerful but poor gas mileage. Has a nice exterior look but have to fold the rear seats down to even put my golf clubs in. Seats stain very, very easily! Plenty of headroom, but feel crowded laterally. Have never known any Jeep to keep wiper blades any longer than two weeks. Not a lot of front area storage. Handling is poor if tires not inflated properly or the wind is blowing. Love it in the snow! Final analysis, if you love Jeep, you will love this, if not, you wont. Next time Ill get a Toyota.

  • Jeep Liberty CRD Diesel - 2005 Jeep Liberty

I purchased this Liberty used with 65K on it. Drove it home 350 mi. Ran great for the first 3K miles and then trouble hit. I had an oil leak that turned into a need for a new turbo, then a new thermostat. Great truck but the dealer cant get parts very fast. No parts available from the warehouse, so parts must come from other dealer inventories, if they will give them up. If you can, stay away from the Liberty CRD.

  • More Diesels Please! - 2005 Jeep Liberty

DaimlerChrysler has a winner with this engine/vehicle combination. Excellent fuel mileage for its weight and size, ability to use alternative fuels, excellent handling and ride, solidly built, climbs 6 percent grades in 5th gear lockup at 70 mph, and have seen upwards of 34 MPG on the interstate at 75 mph. Put this engine in a Dakota 4X4 and DaimlerChrysler will be selling trucks faster than they can build them.

I am so glad I chose to purchase my 2005 Jeep Liberty! Driving the Liberty is a wonderful experience. It handles very well. With the weight of the vehicle and the 6 cylinder, I feel very safe and driving is a dream, whether going up steep inclines or just touring around. There is a feeling of proud ownership that comes with owning my Liberty. The color (Dark Khaki), is new for 2005 and what a classy color! I have added a few accessories which gives it my personal identity. I am totally satisfied. The dealership, the service, and the sales department have been wonderful. The Liberty is THE SUV!

  • Unreliable - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

My Liberty 2005 has proved to be the most unreliable vehicle Ive ever had. The first year, the engine had to be removed twice to replace valves, then had problems with transfer case. Then, the rear-end differentials had to be replaced...not once, not twice, not three times, but "four" times. The first three times it was covered by warranty, but not the fourth time. I approached Chrysler for a replacement vehicle, but to no avail. Chrysler is ignoring these problems, indicating they can do nothing. I am definitely stuck with a lemon. Am waiting for the rear-end differential to go out again...which it surely will. What do I do? Sell this piece of junk to some poor unsuspecting buyer

  • Best diesel I have had - 2005 Jeep Liberty
    By -

This is the most fun to drive of the diesels I have had, with the most power and no stick shift worry about. Better than the VW diesels I have had and the stick shift that you are always thinking - is this the best gear? Now I drive and have fun, not worrying about the power curve and gear best performance.
