Overview & Reviews
Sold from 2002-'12, the Jeep Liberty was the successor to one of America's original compact SUVs, the Cherokee (which returned in 2014). True to its tough, capable Jeep lineage, the Liberty has considerable off-road capability, thanks to steep approach and departure angles and exceptional suspension travel and articulation. The Liberty was also rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, a robust figure for its class. These are qualities not found in most other small utility vehicles from this time period, which saw the rise of crossover SUVs optimized for the suburban lifestyle.
Demerits for the Jeep Liberty include a weak engine lineup, with sluggish acceleration and dismal fuel economy from both the four-cylinder and V6 engines offered over the years (the first generation's briefly optional diesel engine is impressively fuel-efficient, however). Interior quality and comfort are also lacking, and by today's standards, the Liberty's general lack of refinement leaves much to be desired.

Love it - 2005 Jeep Liberty
By jane - April 3 - 3:16 amWell, Ive only had it for a couple of days now, but so far, its awesome! First day of ownership, it snowed pretty good where I live and it handled great in the snow and ice. Its extremely comfortable with way more room inside then I expected from a Mid- sized SUV. My kids who are teenagers now have plenty of legroom in the back and the rear cargo space holds all that I need. We already own a Jeep Wrangler (1995) which has been more reliable then any vehicle weve ever owned and because of that, we chose the Liberty over the Sorento, Escape and Santa Fe when we test drove all of them. Very happy and Im sure other potential buyers will be as well. Its fun...youll love it!!!

running renegade, if you feed it! - 2003 Jeep Liberty
By kellyb - April 3 - 2:00 amThis Renegade is a great all around vehicle. If you feed it, it will run. It pulls a 6 by 12 trailer with big motorcycle no problems, both power and handling do it well.

Happy with change - 2004 Jeep Liberty
By MFM440 - April 3 - 2:00 amWe decided to trade our very nicely equiped Grand Cherokee Ltd. for an 04 2wd Liberty Renegade. Retired, we didnt need the larger vehicle and felt we could live without the thirsty 4.7L. I was concerned about performance going to V-6. Not any more. We are very happy with the Libertys performance, fuel economy and overall handling.

Great Car - 2006 Jeep Liberty
By Happy Jeeper - March 31 - 1:16 pmI have read these reviews and I have been very lucky with my Liberty. I drive both city and highway. I get 20 miles per gallon when I drive smart. No jack rabbit starts. As for the brakes I have 78,000 miles on it and still have original front brakes. I have had one window break and fall down and had a friend wedge it up. (it is the back drivers side) So I cant roll it up or down. I have had this car for almost 4 years and have only put new tires on at 55K, new back brakes at 65K, and did tuneup, transmission and raditor service at 55K. This has been a great car and I would buy another in a heartbeat!

Never Again - 2002 Jeep Liberty
By jeep4sale - March 30 - 10:06 amNot too much to say, other than Ill never buy another Chrysler product again. It only took 102,000 miles and the engine is blown. I was quoted $3,500 to replace it with a junkyard engine with 50k miles on it. I bought a used one with 400 miles on it and had installed by my brother (who is a service tech). My final cost was $1,200. It will be put up for sale immediately before something else goes wrong. The gas mileage is terrible for a six cylinder. Im lucky if I get 17 mpg on the highway. Never again. Ill be buying imports for the rest of my life.

Blammo Good Jeep - 2004 Jeep Liberty
By mmcevoy - March 29 - 10:00 amAlmost 1000 miles on my new Liberty. Traded in as Escape for the Liberty. WHAT a huge difference. Escape feels like a tin bucket compared to the Liberty. Rides great, looks great. I get the oddest looks from friends and co-workers, who remark that it looks SO expensive. Renegade package is cool. Only downside is the Renegade rack doesnt fit in my garage.

I love it!!!!! - 2004 Jeep Liberty
By kell - March 29 - 10:00 amLove the manual transmission, makes me feel like Im actually driving. Plus, most of my family cant drive manual so they can never ask to borrow it. Love the way it handles and I am able to zip it around like I did in my small car.

junk - 2005 Jeep Liberty
By lexxii77 - March 28 - 10:53 pmI purchased a new Jeep Liberty earlier this year. At about 1200 miles I went to get an oil change, and the mechanic told me some fluid was leaking out of the rear end. I immediately went to the dealership to see about the problem. Came to find out that the rear end was going out. In order to have it fixed I had to leave it there for 3 days. They gave me the worst rental car I have ever seen, the windows wouldnt even roll down. I will never go back to that dealer again. I traded my Jeep in ( I lost money) and got something else. It was a problem waiting to happen.

Love it... - 2003 Jeep Liberty
By Dutch Rider - March 27 - 10:00 amOne of the best purchases I have made. I have never had a problem. The gas mileage is OK. The best Ive done so far is 19 mpg. Around town I get about 15 mpg. I have taken it on several long trips and it is very comfortable. I have not been off road yet but I will soon. The only regret is I did not purchase with anti-lock brakes. It is a heavy vehicle and I almost could not stop going down a steep road in San Francisco.

The better Liberty ... the CRD - 2005 Jeep Liberty
By Farout - March 23 - 8:40 amThe diesel Liberty (CRD) is about 300 lbs heavier than the 3.7 gas Liberty. There were 8333 Liberty CRDs made in 2005. This was the first time Jeep has offered a diesel Liberty in the USA. However in Europe Liberty CRDs has been in production for approximately 3 years. V M Motori of Italy has made over 500,000 diesel engines for DaimierChrysler beginning in 1993. The Common Rail Diesel is efficient and does not have the smell of diesels from the past. The CRD 2.8L four cylinder develops 160 hp and 295 lb torque at 1800 rpm. This is what many V- 8 engines produce.
